There are laws in United States, which governs all programs that will give benefits to people. Different programs were enacted by law in order to ensure that individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status will receive a certain amount when various circumstances occur. Under the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) are different programs that were created for the benefit of people. Such programs include retirement benefits, Medicare, Social Disability Insurance (SSI), Supplementary Security income (SSI), Survivor Benefits, and Medicare.



Retirement Benefits

One of the benefits given by the state to the people is retirement benefits. When workers pay their taxes, a part of it goes to SSA which will later on be beneficial for them. This program by the SSA covers around 96% of the workers in the United Sates.

The amount of money which will be received by retirees will depend on his/her savings or contribution while he/she was still working. The amount to be received will also be affected and will vary depending on what age he/she shall start receiving it.

People who started to receive their retirement benefits before their full retirement age will acquire lesser amount compared to what they will get if they reach their full retirement age. Whereas, employees who kept on working even after reaching their full retirement age will receive higher benefits.

Social Security Disability Insurance

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides benefits to people who are unable to work due to a medical condition that they posses which is projected to last for a year, or may lead to the person's death.

Federal law is strict when it comes to disability's definition. Social security only provides money to the people who are a match to their definition of disability, unlike some programs which provide money to persons who only possess a short-term disability or partial disability.

Supplementary Security Income

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a program that grants money to both children and adults who only have limited resources and income as a result of their disability.

In addition, it is also given to people who are 65 years old or older, who do not have disabilities but meet the financial limits that were set.

Although the SSI program is being implemented by the SSA, it is funded by the general fund of the U.S. Treasury.

Medicare

Medicare is an insurance program which covers people who are 65 years old or older. People less than 65 years old but have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, as well as people with a permanent kidney problem, are also entitled to receive this benefit.

This program is funded by a part of the employers and worker's payroll taxes and monthly payments that are subtracted from Social Security checks.

Survivor Benefits

Survivor benefits are the payments given to the family members of a worker who dies. When a worker dies, his/her family are, under the program, entitled to receive this benefit.

The purpose why this benefit is given is to help the family in their financial difficulties caused by the death of a person who used to provide for the family.

Family members who are eligible to receive this benefit are the dead worker's children who are unmarried and his/her spouse.

Through the Social Security, people are able to receive financial help during their time of need. However, benefits under these programs are not readily given to people who claim for them.
