If you have missed your period and are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you may be pregnant. This is possible even if you were using birth control. The next step is either to buy a home pregnancy test or contact your doctor.
Because of advances in testing, pregnancy can now be detected as early as four days before a missed period. These tests detect the hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) that is produced by a developing placenta. The hormone is released into a pregnant womans urine and blood and is detected by a pregnancy test.
Home pregnancy tests are simple to use. Most tests involve urinating on a chemically treated stick. If hCG is present, the chemicals in the stick react to the hormone and produce a signal in the tests result window. The tests are extremely accurate if they are used correctly. However, they do occasionally give incorrect results if they are not used properly or if you are taking certain medications. If a home test result is negative, but your period doesnt start in a few days, repeat the test or ask your doctor to give you a test. If a home test is positive, visit your doctor as soon as possible. The sooner that you start your antenatal care, the better off you and your baby will be.
Important!
Seek medical help immediately if you suspect that you are pregnant or are in early pregnancy and are experiencing any of these symptoms:
Severe abdominal pain
Spotting that lasts for more than one day
Blood clots or flesh-like tissue from your vagina
Heavy bleeding that is soaking more than one sanitary pad an hour
Foul smelling vaginal discharge
Faintness or dizziness
Painful urination
Severe vomiting
The baby blues, as mentioned, is the most common. It occurs within the first week or so after delivery. The symptoms may include irritability, tearfulness, anxiety, insomnia, loss of energy, decreased appetite, and difficulty concentrating. These problems usually resolve themselves in a couple of weeks, but should not be ignored. The best way to deal with them is through support, physical and emotional, by friends and family.
Postpartum depression is obviously more serious in nature and requires medical attention. The symptoms are similar to the blues, but last much longer. This mom can experience depression so severe that its a challenge, to say the least, to care for her new baby. It may have long term ramifications on the childs long term development. It may occur anytime during the first six months. Experts note that two out of every three moms recover within a years time, but it has to be managed by a doctor. They say that if the baby blues symptoms last longer than 2 weeks, the mom truly needs to seek medical attention. Treatment is available for this problem. Dont go through this alone!
Some Early Signs Of Pregnancy
On the onset of pregnancy, several early signs of pregnancy are experienced by women. The type and gravity of the sign of pregnancy are different for each woman, depending on her hereditary factors, health, age and lifestyle. One thing is for sure, every pregnant woman experiences one or more of these sign and symptoms of pregnancy. Thus, all those who are expecting to get pregnant should watch out for these signs soon as it begins.
Some Most Common Early Symptoms
A missed menstrual cycle is most surely associated with an early sign of pregnancy. When a woman misses her menstrual period, she gets an indication that she is pregnant. This can be confirmed at home by readily available home pregnancy test kits in medical shops.
However, some women get to know even before the missed period. This happens mostly when a woman is expecting to get pregnant and observes even slight changes in her body, very keenly. One of these early symptoms is sore and swollen breasts with a tingling sensation. Second one is a light cramping in the lower abdomen which occurs during implantation.
Another common symptom is spotting. It is a short, light period or just a few drops of period like fluid, which, in fact, is implantation bleeding. But, if you are already pregnant, even a few weeks, and you observe spotting, you must immediately inform and take advice from your doctor. It may indicate some problem in the pregnancy, to the extent of a miscarriage.
Heartburn and nausea during pregnancy are also some early signs of pregnancy. Nausea generally happens in morning, thus is termed as morning sickness in pregnant women. It is due to hormonal changes early in this period. Heartburn too is due to hormonal changes. In the months 5 to 9, it is due to the growing baby which puts pressure on the mothers digestive organs. The key to take care of these problems is having frequent small meals and doing light exercise, as advised by your doctor during this period.
Less Common Early Signs Of Pregnancy
Apart from these most common signs, others are headache, tiredness throughout the day, anxiety, increased sensitivity towards odors, increased frequency of urination, lower backache. These symptoms may or may not be present. In some women most of the symptoms are only during the first three months, for others it might continue throughout the period that they are pregnant.
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, then you must at once go to your doctor for check-up and start receiving prenatal care immediately. It is in the best interest of you and your child. Do not be bogged down by these early signs of pregnancy and discomforts and try to remain cheerful, so that you have a positive attitude towards your present condition as well as you look forward to having a healthy and happy child. Happy Journey.
