Canyon Lake, formerly known as Canyon Reservoir, is located on the Guadalupe River just north of New Braunfels in northern Comal County, deep in the hill country. The Canyon Lake project is government owned. It is currently operated by the Fort Worth District of United States Army Corps of Engineers. The lake was created by a earthfill dam and is used for recreation, water conservation and flood control.

Canyon lake construction was started on June 27, 1958 and was completed in 1964 and gave the lake an enormous of sixty-mile beautiful shoreline for residents to enjoy.

The construction of the dam and rapid growth of the surround areas around Canyon Lake are one of the main developments in Comal Countys history. This also gave rise to rapid development that invigorated and transformed the local economy into rapid growth and make the area one of the largest population centers in Central Texas.
