Texas may seem a pretty straightforward place; everything is big, the friendly people are proud of their nation (oops, state), the food is hearty and delicious, and there’s plenty of wide open space. All of this could serve as an interesting backdrop for a life of laid-back living, but if you aren’t so lucky as to be a Lone Star resident, then at least consider a visit to one of loveliest parts of the state. This happens to be Hill Country, a green and rolling landscape filled with welcoming towns, engaging activities and surprisingly beautiful scenery that may forever alter your perception of the state of Texas.
Hill Country is a broad label that encompasses a large swath of Central Texas. The terrain largely consists of rolling hills made from limestone, boulders, rivers and caves, making exploring by foot, car or bike all attractive pursuits. Several cities are nestled in these parts as well - settlements known for being colorful in their history and culturally rich thanks to the enduring influences of European cultures as well as a proximity to Mexico. There are several paths to take through this varied region and most will likely lead to success.
Just south of the Llano River and about fifteen miles north of Fredericksburg (more about this gem later) is a landmark known as Enchanted Rock. This huge, pink-tinted granite dome can be seen for miles and maintains the mystique it was once assigned by the Native Americans in the area due to strange noises and supposed “ghost fires" that occurred on top of it. Today it is simply the site of a park that is popular for hiking, camping and rock climbing. It is a designated National Historic Place, and is sure to serve as just one exciting element of your vacation journey.
Continuing through the cedar-lined roads and decidedly non-prairie like topography, head to one of the charming towns to fuel up on food, drink and dynamic interactions. Fredericksburg continually tops the list of travelers who enjoy stumbling upon interesting places filled with good stories and unique fusions of people. There is a strong German flavor here as well as a devotion to maintaining a one-of-a-kind identity. Weekenders from places like Austin and San Antonio often visit for a brief respite from bigger city life, choosing to partake of antique shopping, fishing and generally relaxing in a quieter spot conducive to clear thinking.
In the springtime, Central Texas blooms with bluebonnets and other wildflowers, making a simple drive an exercise in serenity. Stop for some quality barbeque at any number of establishments the locals are likely to recommend, and save room for Tex-Mex, too. Texans know how to keep a person fed, and for those who are so inclined, there are wonderful local beers and home-grown wines as well.
There’s really no reason to let any appetite go unsated, including the need to hear some soul-stirring tunes. Check out the Cherry Springs Dance Hall northwest of Fredericksburg to walk on hallowed ground: Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and many other legends took the stage here as they helped to shape the local and national country music scene. There are other places with claims to fame throughout Hill Country as well as a continuing country and Honky Tonk scene, so prepare to get your live music fix.
Other activities, of which there are many, include Schlitterbahn Water Park, outlet malls, lakes, tennis, golf and bird watching. The best way to see and do all that it takes to feel properly refreshed is to take enough time from work and find a comfortable home base from which to wander the Hill Country to your heart’s content. A smart step would be to check into renting a vacation home nestled in the pleasant countryside. With all that you need at “home" and a car to take you on a series of daily adventures, the gifts of the land will be readily available.
Hill Country Vacation Rentals are houses, condos and cabins that are available for nights, days and even weeks at a time. They contain all the amenities that make a house a home, including full kitchens, barbeque grills, patios and sleeper sofas. With the help of a well done vacation rental, everyone can coexist peacefully in the downtime that occurs between seeing the sights and staying active in the great outdoors. Having decided to venture off the beaten path already by visiting a place like Central Texas, you might as well go all the way and make this a vacation packed with pleasant surprises of all kind.
Texas Hill Country Vacation
More than 500 thousand acres of Texas is beautiful land with unspoiled ecosystems, state natural areas, state parks, and historical sites. In the heart of Texas there is something for every outdoors enthusiast. You will be able to find lakes a plenty, and tons of state parks with hiking, biking, and enjoyment of the outdoors.
In the northern part of the Texas Hill Country about 90 minutes north of Austin, you will find the county of Burnet. Located in Burnet County, you will find Longhorn Cavern State Park. This is a natural limestone erosion creation that has taken thousands of years to form and what a wondrous site to behold. You will be able to take a walk back in time in the museum and learn about the history of the cavern. It has been speculated that it was used as shelter during the prehistoric times for cavemen and many Ice Age fossils have been found in the area. However, the earliest records show that the Comanche Indians used it first. There is also history of its use during the Civil War and there is legend that it was the hideout of the notorious Texas outlaw, Sam Bass. It is definitely a great place to explore and see a piece of Texas history.
For more outdoors recreational activities, you should head on over to Inks Lake State Park located on the Colorado River in Burnet County Texas. Here you will see the geological wonder of gneiss, or protrusions of granite rocks. They are a beautiful site to behold. The best way to view this is definitely from the water and there is plenty of that at Inks Lake State Park. It is a great place for all water activities as well as hiking and backpacking along the 7 miles of trails. Definitely a must visit place if you want to see some more rugged terrain.
If you head a little more west to the counties of Lampasas and San Saba, you will find yet another haven for the outdoors devotee: the Colorado Bend State Park. Again, Texas shows its beautiful nature. You can take a guided tour to the Gorman Falls or even go on the Gorman Cave tour. While most of the park can only be seen by way of guided tours, it is definitely a great place to visit to see the beautiful, rugged terrain. Here, you will find not only 15 miles of hiking trails, but also mountain biking trails and lots of places for primitive camping. If water is more your thing, you can enjoy canoeing in the beautiful canyons of the Colorado River. You can even see Post Oak Falls by way of boat about ½ a mile down the river. It is a great place to spend the day enjoying the beautiful Texas scenery and watch the sunset.
Texas has a lot to offer for everyone. The next time you are visiting Austin or San Antonio, the gateway to the Texas Hill Country, make sure to visit all of the beautiful sites. It is definitely a place to visit if you like the great outdoors. No matter what type of outdoors activity that you like to do, make sure to make the Burnet, Lampasas and San Saba Counties a must stop on your trip to the Texas Hill Country.
