Times are definitely changing and for proof of that you need look no further than the independent dance group that is quickly breaking out in Australia. Sneaky Sound System, an electro-pop group, got their start as a club act but even from the beginning it quickly became apparent that this group was headed for far greater heights. Therefore, it really should not have come as much of a surprise when the group managed to practically sweep the ARIA awards, walking in with no less than six nominations and bringing home two coveted awards. In addition, they have broken through sales records, snatched a chart record, played to sold out stadium crowds and are quickly sailing toward even more success now that their second album is on the cusp of being released.



There was once a time when it would have been practically unheard of for any music group to try to make it as an independent, let along actually succeed doing it. Yet that is just exactly what Sneaky Sound System has managed to accomplish. They might not have a big record label backing them but it has not prevented them from achieving their goals.

The founding members of the group, Daimon Downey and Angus McDonald, first met in the spring of 2000 at a costume party, oddly enough. The two apparently recognized a kindred spirit in one another and before long they established plans to begin headlining at the nightclub of a friend. This proved to be an especially providential decision, as their combined talent was immediately picked up on by club visitors. Within a year they had signed with Sony Music Australia and issued a mix CD by late 2003. The duo seemed to know from the beginning that they were bound for even greater things and quickly worked toward establishing their own label, Whack Recordings.

After teaming up with Peter Dolso, producer and engineer, they began working on an official debut. The single Hip Hop Hooray quickly became a hit. After they partnered with Connie Mitchell, it was clear they had found a combination that could not fail. Singles from their self-titled debut album, Sneaky Sound System, went on to hit the Top 40. The group followed up with touring stints to support such groups as Robbie Williams and the Scissor Sisters, which seemed to only heighten the interest of fans. The group has also performed in support of Jamiroquai on an Australian national tour before heading out to international locales such as Hong Kong, London, Italy, New York and Miami. In practically every location the trio has delivered their Funky House Music sound, their shows have been sold out, clear evidence that the frenzy about this unlikely group is escalating and is not likely to come back down to earth any time soon.

Sneaky Sound System's second album, which has been much awaited, is due out in September. Judging by the group's previous success, their second album is sure to garner just as much attention and acclaim as their debut album.
