It's easy to discount the importance of leadership development, assuming that corporate leaders either have what they take or they don't and if they do they'll learn as they go. If they don't...well, if they didn't have what it took they wouldn't have been given a leadership role to begin with, right?
Not necessarily. Sometimes all that's needed is a little leadership development.
There is no such thing as a natural born leader, which is why leadership development is so important. Anyone can have the fundamental requirements necessary for the leadership role. It's how they develop them that matters.
Leadership development is defined as an effort to enhance a learner's ability to lead, an endeavor focused on developing the leadership abilities and attitudes of the individuals sitting at the top of the chain of command. Successful leadership development requires a lot more than the ability to give orders. It also requires diplomacy, top of the line people skills, a certain level of ruthlessness and an understanding of how much space there is and there isn't between the executive suite and the mail room. A good leader doesn't just lead. He or she leads by example.
Leadership development within a company should be addressed at both the individual and group level. Individual leadership development can be undertaken in both a hands-on and a classroom environment, and which method your organization chooses is entirely up to you. Through various exercises the individual learns to identify their strengths and weaknesses, using both to shape and mold their successful leadership style.
Individual leadership development is very important for individuals first entering the field and those who are having a difficult time taking up the reins of command. Additional leadership development offers them the opportunity to hone their skills, smooth over their weaknesses and learn to make the most of their current position rather than finding themselves stuck on the bottom rung of the ladder to success because of a lack of knowledge and personal resources.
Group leadership development is absolutely vital in any company, regardless of industry, because it teaches an executive team how to look, think and act like a team. For a business to run smoothly it's essential that the executive team be able to operate like a well oiled wheel, cognizant of each other's patterns, strengths, weaknesses and goals and able to work together to achieve success. Any leadership team that is rapidly “slapped” together and tossed into the ring is going to fail almost instantly. It takes time and practice, and leadership development offers the opportunity for both.
Leadership development through books, activities, conferences and classroom studies is a vital part of any company's success, which is why there are hundreds of books, seminars, conferences, workshops, boot camps and personal coaches devoted to that very goal. Never underestimate the importance of the team of people holding the reins in an organization, and don't discount the need to allow those individuals to develop their leadership skills both inside and out of the office.
Leadership matters.
The Importance Of Leadership
In the last decade, there is no other industry that has produced as much millionaires as the network marketing industry. However, achieving success in the rather complicated and saturated network marketing business is obviously not easy. If I were to be asked, I would agree with Robert Kiyosaki when he mentioned in his best-selling book that leadership is central to success in any business. It is even truer in MLM-based business wherein the main objective is to maintain the continuity and propagation of the network.
When one starts out with an MLM business, the excitement and the eagerness will engulf you, along with the idea of increased income. Chances are, you would resort to either online or offline marketing, or even both, to attract as much people as you need to. However, as you realize how difficult it is to draw more people and how competition is tight, the enthusiasm wears off. The same sad story has happened to much too many network marketing endeavors that ended up in vain. Almost all these cases have one thing in common - the lack of proper leadership to keep the fire of the business going.
In the network marketing business, leadership is defined differently. Good leadership in MLM translates to your capacity to influence your prospects and to inspire people around you to follow exactly what you say. Your leadership qualities are shown in how you deal with your leads and downlines, and how to train them such that they inherit the same vigor that you have. Good leadership is how you encourage everyone, by good example, to not give up despite difficult circumstances. It is only with great leadership that the momentum of any network marketing business is continued to reach unimaginable heights.
What does it take to be a good leader in MLM? There are countless ways to achieve this. For example, you can be a good online network marketer through persistence, patience and the right marketing strategies. I would like to focus on four general leadership points that will be applicable to all kinds of network marketing businesses:
1. Be confident. Belief in yourself and in the organization is vital to your network marketing success. Your convincing power depends largely on the confidence you exude and how clearly you communicate your message across.
2. Motivate. Make sure that you give your downlines the right motivation to keep them going. Remember how important it is to instill in them the same fire to get them to act the way you need them to. The motivation may come from different sources, so make sure you know just what will tickle their fancy.
3. Emphasize teamwork. It should be emphasized that MLM is all about teamwork. The success of one is the success of everyone else in the network. It is not individual success that you should aim for, but the success of the organization as a whole.
4. Train. A good leader is a good trainer. Invest time to learn and impart sufficient knowledge to your downlines.
The qualities of a good leader are not innate. Nor is it learned overnight. Leadership is learned through time and experience, and honed with each challenging day. If you think that you are not well-armed with the right attitude to make you a good leader or to succeed in MLM, it is not too late! Re-examine yourself, shift your mindset - do whatever it takes. I am quite sure that you have the enthusiasm that will fuel your efforts, and that is a great starting point. Success in network marketing business is not that difficult to achieve with the right leadership qualities.
