The International Culinary Institute

    View:
There's learning how to cook and then there's learning the art of food preparation with a reputable and highly regarded culinary institute. Those who have a passion not only for food but all the various aspects of creating the perfect dining experience need more than just the skills that come from grandma's kitchen. Those looking to obtain industry certifications will need a legitimate accredited program.

With the ever-rising number of food preparation shows on TV, cooking schools are quickly becoming one of the top choices for secondary education. It is a career that combines an out of the ordinary work environment with very little chance for tedium and monotony. Working as a chef requires the ability to think on one's toes in a fast paced environment.

When dining in a restaurant, many do not look past the delicious meal that is set before them. However, in order to truly learn about the culinary world, one must take part in a curriculum expressly designed to educate students for work in a professional environment. Not only must this professional culinary environment handle food in a way that is deemed safe by government regulation, there is also the need for safe equipment handling and an understanding of emergency first aid procedures.

Students will also be required to learn how to budget and manage a kitchen and its various ingredients. At a culinary institute, one will learn these aspects while combining their skill and passion with the science and chemistry of cooking and baking. The result is often a career that is most satisfying, fulfilling and delicious.

With a career in the culinary world, one can take a specific passion or skill and turn it into a profession of its own. It is not uncommon for many who choose this career path to specialize only in a certain type of food preparation, such as an Italian or Japanese. Another popular option is that of a pastry chef who prepares baked goods and desserts.

Because of the amount of safety guidelines, rules, equipment and specialized knowledge that come with working in a professional culinary environment, even entry level positions are likely to call for some type of certification. It is not likely one will be able to obtain a position as a chef without the proper knowledge or training. However, it is a profession that offers fast learning through a hands-on learning environment.

A legitimate culinary institute is one that has a curriculum prepared not only by an experienced and knowledgeable teaching staff but one that also meets all required state and federal guidelines. Completion of the required course work will result in a legitimate degree that allows graduates to break into the career of their dreams or move forward in the one they have. The amount of time need to complete the coursework can vary depending on the certification.

Despite the uncommon environment of this type of education, any legitimate form of accredited school or institute will be able to offer qualifying students financial aid. By working with a financial aid specialist, one will be able to determine which programs are available and how they can be best implemented. A workable plan of action often makes the decision to pursue an education much easier.

Since the ritual of dining is greatly entwined with the foundation of nearly every culture, the knowledge that comes from a culinary institute is often highly revered. It not only leads to a reputable career but a career that can be shaped over the years as one's knowledge increases. The joys of life will always taste that much better when one is able to combine their passion with a career.
The International Culinary Institute
Many community colleges and traditional four-year colleges allow students to earn credits by demonstrating their experience. For considerably less cost than taking the course, students can take a test to prove their knowledge in the subject. If they succeed, they are awarded credit for the class without having to actually take it. Many culinary institutes are now offering similar programs, allowing individuals with a certain amount of work experience in the culinary arts to earn their degree without having to go back to school.

Earned credit programs can vary from one culinary institute to another. Various programs are offered to individuals who have worked in the field for at least four years; due to the students' prior experience, the program can go through the course requirements of an associate's degree much more rapidly than with beginning students. At another culinary institute, a culinary professional might only need to pass the corresponding tests and prove his or her knowledge of the culinary arts; the amount of experience required to participate in an earned credit program can also vary from one culinary institute to another.

Each culinary institute may also vary in how many classes you will be able to test out of. Some schools may only provide the option for lower-level classes, requiring even experienced students to take upper-level courses.

Another option that you can use to accelerate your degree is to transfer credits you have already earned from another school. Once again, though, each culinary institute may vary in what or how many credit hours they will allow you to transfer from another school. For instance, some schools will transfer only general education classes, requiring their students to take at their facility any courses that are part of their major. Also, if you are going to attempt to transfer course credits to another culinary institute, be sure to research the school before making a decision of what culinary institute you will attend. There are different accreditation agencies, and as a result the credits earned at one school may not be transferable to another.

Getting a degree from a culinary institute is an important step for anyone who wants to pursue or is currently pursuing a career in the culinary arts. Regardless of how much experience you have had, a degree from a culinary institute verifies to a potential employer that you have mastered the culinary arts. If you have worked in the field for years but don't yet have a degree to show for it, an earned credit program from a culinary institute can help you get the degree you seek more quickly and easily than if you went back to school fulltime.
