While Sneaky Sound System has achieved phenomenal success in the last two years, the group has been pounding out music for more than five years. Originally, the group was comprised of Angus and Daimon, who established their own production company and began to independently produce their own music, something that was not widely done at the time. Although the group managed to achieve marginal success in Sydney when they first formed, it has only been recently that the hard work and tremendous talent of the group has been recognized around Australia and even beyond.
So, what is it exactly that has led to the astounding of success of Sneaky Sound System in the last two years? Their debut album achieved top spots on the music charts and the group even swept the ARIA awards in terms of nominations before walking away with two much coveted awards. Their second album, due out this summer, has been much awaited and is anticipated to be even better than the first album.
In large degree, the phenomenal success of the band can be attributed to the talented and beautiful Connie Mitchell, the newest member of the group. Prior to joining Sneaky Sound System, the young vocalist performed with the Aussie group Primary. Mitchell and the two founding members of Sneaky Sound System met in Hyde Park, where Mitchell was signing and playing the guitar at the time. While Sneaky Sound System had already developed its own distinctive Funky House Music sound, the addition of Connie Mitchell has certainly enhanced the group's collective talent.
Mitchell has frequently been described as being ‘a star in her own right.' With her fresh, young beauty and golden voice, it is clear that the depth of Mitchell's talent has barely been tapped. In addition to her work with Sneaky Sound System and prior performances with Primary, Mitchell has also performed with a number of other groups. During early 2007, Mitchell recorded vocals with Kanye West and is featured on four tracks of his album, Graduation. The singles “Flashing Lights” as well as “Can't Tell Me Nothing” are two of the singles on which Mitchell is featured. Mitchell has also performed with Snoop Dogg.
Sneaky Sound System's second album will appear this summer. Early released singles have already achieved wide acclaim and it is rapidly becoming clear that 2, the group's second album, will achieve just as much success, if not more acclaim, than the group's self-titled debut album.
The group will be going on tour just after the release of the second album in order to promote it, appearing in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The vocals on the early releases have been so critically acclaimed, that speculation is already insisting this album could be exactly what the group needs to experience an international break-through. If that is the case, and it certainly looks as though it could be, then Miss Connie can certainly be attributed with much of the group's dynamic success.
The Sneaky Sound System
It would seem that Black Angus and MC Double D always had confidence in their abilities and their dreams to make it big, but it was not until they ran across Connie Mitchell, that the final missing piece of the puzzle fell into place. Prior to forming a musical partnership with Miss Connie, the two had enjoyed plenty of success on their own on the club scene. They had even released a mix CD that had enjoyed marginal local success. In order to break into the next level, the duo needed an awesome vocalist and they clearly knew it. While both were quite talented in their own respective rights, without a vocalist, it would have been difficult to forge on.
Once the group had laid down the track for what would become their first hit song, the trio began to work on releasing their debut album. MC Double D and Black Angus had already laid the ground work by establishing their own record label. All that was left was to work on the singles that would fill the album. The resulting album took influences from a variety of different sources including early 1980s stylistic pieces and such groups as The Cure, Kate Bush, Prince, Human League, New Order and The Cars as well as Eurythmics. When you hear the album, you will immediately notice the Funky House Music tinged bass lines that are as thick as they are talented, guitar licks that roll so much you wonder if they will ever stop, melodies that can only be described as lush, and vocals that will haunt you as they describe stories of love as well as loss.
While the two founding members of the band might have always dreamed of success, the large degree that they have managed to attain in such a short amount of time must certainly be somewhat surprising. Suddenly they had become a real band with a real debut album and real hits all over the place. After cruising past record breaking hits with their first album, the group is now preparing for the release of their second album, 2, which will come out in the fall.
The tunes released by Sneaky Sound System are still irresistible in their party-like atmosphere, something that MC Double D and Black Angus quickly became known for during the days when they were working the club scene. With the addition of Miss Connie, the group also now has a depth that has taken it in a new direction, inspiring and harkening to an entirely new group of individuals that is quickly propelling the group to the top of the charts in not only Australia but around the world as well.
Crossover success? International superstars? They may not be quite there yet, but considering the attention that the group has received in just the last year, it appears that it will not be long before Sneaky Sound System can lay claim to those titles as well.
