Top Grossing Films 2008

    View:
The movie biz has seen ups and downs over the last century and many has been the technological advancement that has been the predicted downfall of the movie biz. The introduction of home projection, television and home cinema were all set to knock audience figures however non have succeeded in burying the talkies.

Despite there being a lull in movie biz box office figures around the release of television this was mainly due to the amount of people during the war who attended news reels who could now watch the news in the comfort of their own home. In fact the lowest attendances were in 1984 and since then they have been steadily growing, despite all the technological advances in home cinema.

When looking at the greatest grossing films of all time, 19 of the top 25 are made in the new millennium which shows that more people are spending more money on the cinema than ever, but you must also take into account inflation. The greatest grossing film the movie biz has ever seen is Titanic from 1997 which earned the movie biz a whopping 1835.4 million dollars.

Considering the second highest grossing film of all time is the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King which grossed 1129.2 million dollars, this puts the success of Titanic into perspective, earning 706.2 million dollars. If the difference was a film it would be at number 30 in the all time grossing box office list illustrating the unprecedented success of the epic by David Cameroon.

Third on the movie biz all time greatest earners is the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest. This is competing with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy for the title of largest earning box office franchise of all time however falls just short with a combined box office total of 2672.2 million to the 2924.7 million dollars that the Lord of the Rings achieved.

As far as box office franchises go everything points towards one classic series of films. The Star Wars series of six films has earned the movie biz 4358.4 million dollars which surprisingly comes in second as the all time greatest box office grossing movie franchise. If you have not guessed yet then you never will, the winner is Harry Potter.

The five films are all in the top 25 highest grossing films of all time and despite being a film down on the Star Wars series of films, it topped the cult sci-fi series with an unfathomable 4479.1 million dollars. These statistics show that more people are spending money at the cinema than ever and developing countries allowing screenings of western films has strengthened the global market.
