Turning Down A Job Offer

    View:
You may be only a summer intern, but that shouldn't stop you from acting like an regular employee. Get to work on time and finish up projects before you leave the office. Don't leave early unless it's very urgent and don't take extra liberties. Resist the temptation to join the group of people who take their jobs for granted. Don't talk on your cell phone at work or take long lunch breaks, unless you have cleared it with your supervisor first. Above all, avoid office politics and don't engage in office gossip.

If you prove your worth in the office and behave like a valued employee then everyone will appreciate you and your work. This in turn will compel management to consider you for a full time job.

Be Generous And Pay Your Dues

Generosity pays - so act like an employee and take extra assignments and tasks to showcase your skills. Sometimes you may have to take a less glamorous job during your internship, but do not neglect your work and do that work with full sincerity.

Lower your expectations about how exciting an internship will be, as this can soften the blow of being asked to do "grunt work". Don't balk on any given tasks and do the work with a smile on your face, as people generally remember a gracious and well-behaved and hard working person. A smile can open many doors.

Exceed Expectations

Sometimes as an intern, your tasks may be limited to menial as well as clerical jobs. Don't despair - keep your spirits up and be ready to take on any odd job with a smile and go beyond the call of duty.

If you see someone in the office staying late or hear an employee being overburdened with work, try and share the burden. Go out of your way and ask for new assignments. At first, you may not be given important assignments, but when your managers see your sincerity (and abilities), they may start giving you important tasks. Your initiative will be remembered when important tasks come up.

Be Management-Friendly

Your day-to-day routine may not permit you to be friendly with all the staff. So remember make small talk with everyone, especially your manager. Make sure they know that you are sincerely interested in the company and its goals - and you may just be rewarded with a full time job when your studies are completed.
Turning Down A Job Offer
Unfortunately, when there are layoffs it's usually more than a few people, and they may possess the same job skills and background as you. This makes for heavier competition. More competition can easily translate to a longer job search and fewer opportunities.

What steps can you take to ease the pain of unemployment? Can you make your job search a more productive event? Let's look at some of the ways you can turn around an unfortunate event and make it a creative endeavor.

There's not always warning of upcoming layoffs. Sure there can be signs, like an increase in the stress level, or a long-term drop in production. Sometimes the company is prepared for the rollercoaster ride in business, but let the truth be known, not even the company president knows for sure when those layoffs will happen.

There may be other signs that things in the office are taking a turn. A change in management behavior may be a sign. When work slows people try to keep up the appearance of being busy. Managers can start to micro-manage. Micro-managing can be a reactive response to fear, or be an action intended to re-establish control over the situation.

When you start to see those warning signs you should start to consider the possibilities. This is a good time to update your resume. Include not just job skills but other qualities as well, like your great attendance record, or your positive reviews. Think about the successes you have experienced, and be willing to share those with potential employers.

Find ways to empower yourself as well. If you find it difficult to think positive about your resume, that's okay. Strengthening yourself should be an ongoing, life long service to yourself. Find a method or program to show you ways to think clearer and feel better, such as EFT or Reiki training. Any wellness or self improvement class will pay off.

It is possible to take the unfortunate layoff experience and turn it into an opportunity for self improvement or even a career shift. Take the time to focus on how this change can serve you, and empower yourself with those amazing thought shifting techniques you have learned. Career Crisis' are not the end of the world.
