Effleurage (Stroking movement): This is light, stroking, continuous movement applied with the palms and fingers in slow and rhythmic manner (without applying pressure).
This massage movement is applied to melt fat on the forehead, face, neck, chest, shoulders, back, arms and hands. While massaging, the hand is held loosely, the wrist is kept flexible and fingers should conform to the shape of the area being massaged.
Petrissage (Kneading movement): This is the actual message movement which relieves muscle tension and stress, which is why most people have messages. The masseur will use his or her full hands applying light, but firm, pressure to the skin. Just like effleurage, petressage movements will also aid in melting back, shoulder, and thigh fat. Furthermore, this movement will also relax contracted muscles, eliminate fatigue, and even tone muscles.
Tapotement (or Percussion): In this massage technique comprising of tapping, slapping and hacking movements, the pressure is applied with the sides of hand with partly flexed fingers or fingertips.
This movement will increase blood and lymph circulation, stimulate sensory nerves, and redistribute fatty tissue - all while strengthening and toning the muscles targeted by this movement.
Friction (Deep rubbing movement): Light circular movement produced by the pads or fingertips or thumbs of the hands, used on the scalp, arms, face and neck. This movement breaks down nodules and fibrous adhesion, increases blood and lymph circulation, and slims down arms and legs.
Vibration (Shaking) Movement: The vibration movement is just as the name suggests; a fine trembling movement applied with the finger pads and thumbs. This movement is always given along a nerve path as messaging in the wrong direction can cause skin and muscles to sag. When applied correctly, the vibration movement has many beneficial effects such as nerve stimulation, pain relief, and it loosens scar tissue.
