Male Yeast Infection Causes
Joseph Nyamache
Candidiasis is the scientific name for a yeast infection. This is a type of yeast which is naturally occurring in our bodies; especially in our mouths, our GI tract, underarms, under the nails and anywhere where there are folds in our skin. In women, yeast infections are especially common underneath the breasts and in the vaginal area.
It is when this normally harmless microorganism grows out of control that a yeast infection happens. The particular fungus which is at fault in yeast infections is known as Candida Albicans. This yeast is present in the moist areas of our bodies. The most obvious and the most common symptom of a yeast infection is an intense itching or burning sensation in the infected region.
Common Yeast Infections
Anyone can have a yeasty infection, this is a problem which affects men, women and children alike. The most commonly seen forms of yeast infection are vaginal yeast infections, diaper rash, nail be infections and thrush.
Vaginal Yeast Infection
In women, this is the most common type of yeast infection. The symptoms are the usual itching and burning, along with (in many cases) a discharge. These infections are often linked to the use of antibiotics and steroids but can also be brought on by diabetes, the presence of sperm in the vagina, pregnancy and oral contraceptives. These infections are more common in postmenopausal women.
A vaginal discharge is often seen in cases of vaginal yeast infection. Itching and pain during sex and urination are also common symptoms.
Thrush
Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. This infection is also seen in persons who are on anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and oral contraceptives. Ill fitting dentures and smoking are also risk factors for thrush. Mothers can even catch thrush from their babies during breast feeding.
The most obvious symptom of thrush is creamy colored spots in the mouth, these can be painful to scrape off. Difficulty swallowing and fever (in severe cases where the infection spreads to the throat) are other symptoms of thrush which are often seen.
Diaper Rash
Diaper rashes are often due to a yeast infection and are usually seen in babies and children up to two years of age, as well as in adults who suffer from incontinence. Candida thrives in moist, warm environments, so it is logical that the infection presents where the diaper is in direct contact with thee skin. Diaper rashes look like bright red patches in the skin; these are often seen after taking antibiotics.
Diaper rash is easy to spot. The redness will be all over the affected area (usually the same areas covered by the diaper).
Nail bed Infections
Yeast infections can also take hold in the skin underneath the fingernails, this is most commonly seen in individuals whose hands are frequently wet and those who have had a manicure gone awry.
Nail bed infections are characterized by pain and redness around the nail, as well as swelling. In severe infections, the nail will separate from the skin, with the nail bed turning an unsightly yellowish color.
Yeast infections are easily treatable and can usually be cleared up in a matter of weeks. The best way to prevent a yeast infection is to maintain good overall health so that you will have a healthy immune system capable of fighting off the infection.
