The GRP Mouldings (also known as fibreglass mouldings) are manufactured with the help of a mould. This mould is the reverse of the product and depends on the design of the original source of shape. The mould is made from fibre glass, aluminium or latex rubber.
After the mould has been prepared, it is waxed. It is prepared with releasing agents. The gel coat can be sprayed or painted on the face of the mould. This gel coat is allowed to cure. Then the glass fibre is laid into the mould. The glass fibre is then impregnated with resin. Then the saturated glass fibre is rolled with a special roller to consolidate the glass fibres and to remove any trapped air. The application of glass fibre and saturation with resin is repeated till the moulding becomes thick as per requirement. The laminate is allowed to harden and cure. After this the can be taken out from the mould.
Properties of GRP Mouldings:
1. It is quite durable.
2. The final finishing is quite good
3. It is non corrosive
4. It is resistant to chemicals
5. It is designed to endure adverse climatic conditions
6. The design of GRP Moulding is flexible
7. It is adaptable to adverse conditions.
8. It can be UV stabilized
9. Its manufacture, installation and longevity is cost effective
10. The GRP is light in weight.
11. It is quite strong.
12. It can be engineered to withstand specific stress and loads.
13. It is non corrosive
14. It takes a shorter time for production
1. Size: The size of the GRP Mouldings can vary from being as small as the cup holder to a double-decker bus. This variation and range of size is one of the greatest advantages.
2. Shape: The shape as mentioned earlier depends upon the mould.
3. Colour: Any colour can be given to the surface gel-coat of a GRP moulding.
4. Finish : The finish can either be a matt finish or gloss finish.
5. Paint: The surface can be painted to give different texture and look.
6. Mimic: The GRP Mouldings can be designed in such a way as to mimic bronze, granite, wood , stone , or any RAL or BS colour.
7. Use: GRP mouldings are used in leisure, aerospace, defence, construction, marine, automotive, furniture, medical , transport and even nuclear industry.
The more you know about the GRP mouldings, the more is its applicability in our day to day life.
