If you have never had the pleasure of experiencing first hand the horror of having a pipe burst inside your house some where, then you are definitely in for a big surprise the first time you ever do. A lot of times the most common place for a ruptured pipe will hopefully be underneath a cabinet like a kitchen or a bathroom sink. The faster you can get the water off or at least stop the up the pipe to slow down the flow, the less mess you will have to clean up and the less potential you will have that the water will damage other things in your home.

If your plumbing breaks under a sink or at the toilet, there will usually be a valve near the incoming water line that you can shut the flow of water off. If this is the case, if you realize the water is coming in soon after it starts, then you might not get such a big flood. What makes it so terrible is when the break in plumbing happens when you are not home. This can be a huge mess to clean up. Your first priority is to get the water off. If you can not use an inside valve to turn the water off, you should know ahead of time where your outside valve is. Sometimes it is underneath a sewer plate that the water company uses or if you have a well pump, you have to turn it off there by shutting off the power to it.
