History Of Art And Design
Domen Lombergar
Digital art is created using the digital technology by an artist. In this society that is getting developed day by day, digital art is also advancing a lot. Digital art involves the use of computers and mousse to create the art whereas the traditional form of art involved papers, pencils, brushes and paints. The creation of the digital art cannot be told specific but it is created using the computer technology. But it is not only the computer technology from where the roots of digital art are taken but also from pop art and surrealism. Digital art is interpreted again and again from the older art forms and has it s own techniques that brought the art into light.
In 1945 a writer named Vannevar Buch wrote an article by name "As we may think" in which he discussed about the future of computers. The essay described about a computer that was not built but it highlighted the ability of the computers that are about to come in the future.
Digital art started developing in the sixties when the first competition for the computer art took place in 1963. The first 3 exhibitions were displayed only after 2 years. Douglas Englebart created the ideas of direct manipulation and bitmapping of windows in the later part of the decade. In the institute of Contemporary art, the exhibition named Cybernetic Serendipity was displayed in London.
The seventies brought rise to computer art programs such as SuperPaint by Richard G Shoup while in that same year digital art was being recognized in the literary world with essays being written like Artist and Computer by Ruth Leavitt. In 1980 Paintbox was created by Quantel the second computer based art program. In that same year, Contemporary and Post modern Art were the latest art styles which promoted art through different mechanisms such as through video art.
A digital art event called The World in 24 hours was launched by Robert Adrian in the year 1982 that created a big mark in the history of digital art. It had artists from three different continents and in 16 cities that were linked via digital outlets such as by computers, videophone and fax. Photoshop came into existence in the year 1986. It came an year later the first International symposium took place in Utrecht in Holland on electronic arts. People were able to change the photos on their personal computer in the later stage of 80s.
Internet hit the market in the 90s. There was an introduction of html scripts and codes with the World Wide Web available to the people and the websites were used as an art form and a new language. Digital art museum was established by Wolfgang Leiser and it turned out to be a mammoth event in the history of digital art.
Nowadays, digital art is seen everywhere from the films we watch to the magazine we read. It is not simply a matter of going to the MET to see artwork on the wall, it is artwork that is constantly being portrayed around us and has influenced and generated a new type of creativity for society that was unimaginable before the introduction of the personal computer.
