People With Attention Deficit Disorder
B. Keith Johnson
ADHD is a real illness that starts in childhood. Diagnosing ADHD can be extremely difficult, since most people, and particularly children, are impulsive or inattentive some of the time by nature. Although ADHD is relatively common, our knowledge of the problem is incomplete, and is usually thought of as a children's disorder, although many adults have it too. Most clinicians, such as pediatricians, are aware that the diagnosis of ADHD is not easily made by history or office examination.
People with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have difficulty sustaining attention and concentration. ADHD is diagnosed four to nine times more often in boys than in girls and is one of the most researched areas in child and adolescent mental health.
Although it is a medical diagnosis, not a school diagnosis. Hyperactivity or Hyperkinesis, is a diagnosable syndrome recognized by health professionals as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is a condition that affects nearly 3 to 5 percent of children in pre-school and early school years.
Studies show that low DHA intake in infancy can lead or contribute to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Treating ADHD is a long-term team effort, and is often diagnosed when a child is 6 to 12 years of age. ADHD is a condition that conjures up the image of small boys unable to sit still in school,
Hyperactivity and impulsivity are the most noticeable symptoms associated with ADHD, a child may seem to be in constant motion, fidget or squirm, often run or climb, talk excessively, there's concern because ADHD is a disorder that appears to violate a very deeply held assumption that laypeople have about children's behavior.
In asking the question, "What is ADHD?," can be easier to answer by describing what it is not. ADHD is not the childs fault, and it is not the fault of parents. It is not caused by poor parenting skills or associated with lower levels of education and employment status, this is just rediculous.
Treatment of ADHD requires the support and education of parents, along with appropriate school placement. Many people, including doctors, agree that the current state-of-the-art treatment for ADHD does nothing really to treat the actual disorder.
Normalization: Being The Ultimate Goal for Treatment Success. Some kids benefit from medical treatment, while others can be helped with simple dietary or environmental changes. Many parents resist stimulant treatment for ADHD because of long-held concerns (supported by earlier research) of potential growth suppression, although much of the treatment used for ADHD in children is often the treatment of choice for adults too.
The FDA has approved Daytrana, the first skin patch as an alternative treatment for ADHD in children aged 6-12. But even with successful treatment, children with ADHD require almost constant attention.
In closing, ADHD is present at birth. Diagnosing it is difficult, since most people, and particularly children, are impulsive or inattentive some of the time. Treating ADHD is a long-term team effort, and drugs should always be a last alternative. Just remember, A humorous look at life with a child with attention deficit hyperactivity can be a very healthy thing for both.
