Indian Head Massage Therapy evolved out of a ancient family tradition in its country of origin India. Now Indian Head Massage Therapy has grown in popularity and is now a popular massage therapy technique in its own right. Indian Head Massage, also known under the trademarked term Champissage, is an alternative medicine massage therapy in which the head, neck and Face and facial areas are massaged with the purpose of manipulating energy channels. Although there are many different personal techniques for Indian Head Massage, osteopath and massage therapist Narendra Mehta has formalized the therapy that he calls Champissage. Champi is the Indian word for "head massage" and is the origin of the English word shampoo.

The client, fully clothed, sits in a massage chair for the treatment. The session will usually last from twenty to forty-five minutes, and most therapists like their clients to sit quietly for ten or twenty minutes once the massage has been completed.

Indian women used vegetable oils such as coconut, almond, olive and sesame to nourish the hair while promoting circulation through massage. The treatments involves massage, shiatsu and acupressure techniques on upper back, shoulders, arms/hands, neck, scalp and face. This relaxes tense areas but, at the same time, helps to rebalance the energy, clearing any areas of negativity.
