Your mission when writing for profit is to say exactly what it is that you want to say in words that will make sense to the people you are writing to.
Since we all have differences in our lives, you cant imagine that the people you are writing to will read what you write the same way that you do.Some like a lot of detail others enjoy drawing their own conclusions whilst others like things spelled out very clearly.
If we tried to make every personality count in everything that we wrote we could never beginn so our aim should be to communicate directly and to use the short old words when ever possible. When writing as if you deeply care for the person you are trying to reach like a close family member or dear friend not with great affection but clear and respectful language you will succeed most of the time.
Research well and then write assumptively--- let me explain
If i was writing a pitch or an advertisement to teenagers trying to interest them in a site to download music from i could make some assumptions like these.
--------------1. They are informed about band names even if shortened
--------------2.They like fun and have short attention spans
--------------3.They enjoy sarcastic humour and respond well to it
--------------4.Do they want great detail= no just the big picture
--------------5.I must put crucial facts in = they can smell a rip-off
--------------6.Their gender will be f or m or both
--------------7.If their peers think it is cool so will they and the opposite is true
So with a list like the following the writer can begin to map out what attitudes are shared between themselves and the target audience or simply count on the fact that a challenging statement or even insult marketing might provoke this markets interest, but then understand if it goes the wrong way you will find it hard to reconnect the next time with your brand.
Never see your audience as a large group but only as individuals
Every single reader is an individual so as you write try to imagine you are having a conversation with just one person don't be obvious in your attempts to be cool if speaking to a younger audience but remain respectful,interested in their view point and speak plainly so your message will get accross.
When you write a small pitch advertisement like the ones that appear in google adwords and adsense offers realise that every word counts. If you are trying to sell someone on an idea or opportunity of wealth or prosperity you must use powerful words that evoke powerful images. One ad that has worked incredibly well for me is

Let me explain successful people live in houses on the beach we see that image constantly shown on TV and in the movies so people buy in on that first line because they imagine that lifestyle for themselves.
If I were targeting an older market I would use Mercedes-Benz at house or even Hummer if I were selling rap music but either way these brand names provoke powerful images of success.
Listing income per month lets the potential buyer begin to imagine what they would do with that amount every month and finally saying see proof gives all of the above authenticity which is always needed nowdays.
Charlatans sold so many dreams in the 60's,70's and 80's that the current generation demand to see proof of what you are claiming before thay will have buy-in.
