Fish For Freshwater Aquariums
Thulas
Fish kept in an aquarium are definitely the easiest pets you can keep. Take adequate measures to care for your fish after you have established the fish tank. There are things that should be done daily to care for fish and some things that need only be done weekly or bi-weekly. Note that there are not many things that you will have to do everyday for care of your fish tank. You will need to look at the fish every day to make sure they appear to be overall healthy and happy. Fish, suffer from stress as well and you would want to make sure the living environment does not cause any form of unnecessary stress that can threaten their health and well being.
Check the lights and the filters of the aquarium daily to see if they are working correctly and they are properly plugged. You need to feed them daily. When feeding them, just supply enough food to last during a two or three minutes feeding time. Foods that are left after consumption will become trash in the fish tank, which will increase the nitrite levels and cause your fish to fall ill. Make a note of the pH value of the water and its temperature on a weekly basis. Make any changes where necessary and do not procrastinate. Ask the pet store where you got your fish from and they will tell you the exact pH for your fish. You will need this information as it varies among different species of fish.
You cannot avoid the important aspect of cleaning the filter. The filters used in the aquarium will collect the excretory produces of the fish that would otherwise pollute the tank. Unless you clean out these filters, they will simply go on accumulating the waste and will not be able to perform their job well. Another job that the filters do apart from removing the waste is to circulating oxygen into the task. Choked filters will not be able to bring about rapid circulation. This limits the amount of oxygen in the tank. If you do not correct this, your fish may die. You have to replace the filter of the aquarium every 14-21 days as required. As soon as your water begins looking dirty and has an offensive odor, you must clean your filter. Some filters need to be replaced, while other simply need to be cleaned with water.
Water changing in the aquarium should not be done too quickly. See carefully if you have removed the lights and other arrangements from the fish tank before starting to clean it. Replace about a third of the total water in the aquarium once in every one or two weeks. Water can be added from the tank provided you treat it for temperature, keeping it near two degrees of the water in the aquarium. The retailer at the pet store will guide you on the proper kind of water to be used. Some treatments allow the tap water to be ready in as little as an hour, while others need to sit overnight before being added to the tank.
Using a good quality scrubber, remove the alga formations that develop on the sides of your tank. While cleaning, do not agitate the fish. Move rocks and decorations to loosen any debris. Collect this waste when you are replacing the water using a siphon or a bucket. An important part of cleaning is to remove the withered leaves from the aquarium plants. For cleaning the outer area of the fish tank, just sponging the area with a squeegee soaked in tap water will do. Do not miss out on cleaning the lid and the cover of the tank. Plug all the devices again and check out your newly cleansed tank. This finishes your tank cleaning process so now is the time to sit back and savor its cleanliness.
