2000 Calorie Daily Diet
Lauren B. Wallace
Everyone knows that calcium and vitamin D are essential in warding off osteoporosis. But how many people are aware of the possible bone loss dangers that come from our daily diet? The answer is "not many." People are often too busy to pay attention to their diet and the effect that it has on their body. Many people simply take a multivitamin in the morning as a means towards a healthy lifestyle. Although a supplement does provide the essential vitamins and minerals, it is also essential to be aware of the possible dangers that some food ingredients pose to our health.
Salt is one of the ingredients which poses a threat to our bones. A recent study shows that postmenopausal women with a diet rich in salt lose more bone minerals than other women of the same age. It has been stated that the high salt intake among Americans is one of the major reasons why our bodies need such a large amount of calcium. However, avoiding salt is one of the most difficult things to do considering that sodium is present in almost all processed foods. The only way that you can decrease your sodium intake is by eating a fruit and vegetable rich diet along with low sodium foods.
Another ingredient that poses a threat to our bones is contained in widely popular soft drinks. Basically, any drink that contains phosphoric acid is bad for your bones. This particular ingredient can increase calcium excretion in your urine. This means that you will lose a lot of calcium when you urinate. Caffeine is yet another ingredient that takes calcium away from bones. We lose six milligrams of calcium for every hundred milligrams of caffeine that we consume. Although these numbers may not appear significant, they can surely have a negative impact on a body that is not getting enough calcium to begin with. So try to avoid some of these harmful ingredients and be sure to consume enough calcium.
