Halogen Light Bulbs Energy Efficient
Jessica Deets
When it comes to ways to save the environment, energy itself is often overlooked, especially by people in their homes. The power in a home takes fuel and this fuel often comes from valuable resources that cannot be replaced as easily as many would like them to be. With everything from the heating and cooling system to lights in most homes running on electricity, it's important for a homeowner to find ways to reduce electric use. While turning off the lights can help, this isn't always practical. Here's where halogen bulbs shine.
Halogen bulbs are generally a little more expensive than regular incandescent lights, but they are for a number of very good reasons. Halogen is a different kind of light that uses the energy from a home in a more efficient and saving manner than regular bulbs. The advantages to these bulbs are many.
Halogen bulbs are very different from a regular bulb. A regular bulb is made of a frosted glass envelope that has gas, generally nitrogen, inside. A tungsten filament is heated up by the home's electricity to light up the filament, producing the light. Normal bulbs will last for up to about 1,000 hours, but they also radiate heat and a lot of it.
Halogen on the other hand burns hotter, which means brighter. It also burns more efficiently and tends to last longer. Unlike those regular incandescent bulbs that work for about 1,000 hours, halogen is generally rated to work for 2,000 to 3,000 hours. That's up to three times as long. Plus, they offer an energy savings over incandescent that just can't be denied.
Although a halogen bulb still uses that tungsten filament, it employs a quartz envelope. The gas inside this envelope is generally from the halogen family of gases. These gases combine with the tungsten vapor and basically recycle the tungsten, which makes the light last longer. Halogen bulbs also burn quite hot, very hot in fact, but since they naturally recycle, they last longer. The design of the bulb is such that it can burn hotter and brighter than a regular one without using extra energy. This is where the money savings come into play along with the energy savings.
Halogen lights are now available for use in just about everything imaginable. They come is all kinds of shapes and sizes for indoor and outdoor use. Halogen lights are recommended for energy savings in any room in a home and even come in designer styles for chandeliers and other decorative lighting fixtures.
And while halogen is ideal for indoor use, they really shine outside. The brighter burning bulbs are perfect for floodlights, workspaces and more. By providing more illumination, they are great to include in security systems as well.
Smarter, brighter and longer lasting than regular bulbs, halogen might cost more, but the savings over the long run can be great. More environmentally friendly than their incandescent brothers, these bulbs help a homeowner save energy, which is good for everyone.
