How To Build Chicken Coop
Mark Johnson
For any structure it takes many steps when it comes to learning how to build. Chicken coop construction is no different. The planning stage is where the decision to what features you wish to incorporate into your chicken coop. The different features a chicken coop should include are ventilation, nesting numbers and positions to perch number and positions. This can be determined by the number of hens that you wish to be a part of your flock. The common size allowance is 2 square feet of area inside the chicken coop per hen to prevent overcrowding. Another feature that is handy will allow the farmer access to the inside without disturbing the hens. This could make catching them easier is a hatch in the roof.
When thinking about feeding and watering the chickens the outside is considered the best placement. This makes cleaning up easier than it would be if these features were inside the chicken coop. The outside perimeter fence has to be thought about. This should have enough space for 8 square feet per chicken in your flock.
Once the plan has been finalized the building materials must be collected and purchased. Most local home improvement warehouses have all the necessary supplies and equipment to make your chicken coop a success.
When it comes time to erect the structure, the weather should be considered. If rain is in the forecast, the start of the building process might need to be delayed. If the limber get wet it might warp. This would make it more difficult to have a square of true building. When the building materials are being purchased, a tarp might be a wise additional purchased incase bad weather takes place during the building process.
After the chicken coop is erected, it must be painted to protect the structure from the elements. A good primer should be used before the paint is applied. This will help the finish last many more years than just paint alone. But learning on how to build chicken coop properly is easy, it just needs to be planed properly.
