Located near the holiday resort of Salou and the Universal Studios theme park Port Aventura one of the largest in Europe.
Tarragona has a wall surrounding the old city.It can easily be reached from Barcelona by train or bus.
The city has been known as Imperial Tarraco since the Roman domination. Here you can admire some of the best preserved Roman ruins in the Iberian Peninsula.
It is home to a large port and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. Its economic activity comes from a large amount of chemical industries located in the city or in surrounding areas.
Tourist attractions include the Museum of Archaeology and the Roman ruins of Tarraco, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The town itself has the usual Spanish assortment of plazas sprinkled with cafes and tap as bars. The best place to spend and evening is in one of Tarragonas many plazas with a glass of beer and plate of tap as. At night if you want to have some drinks and dance you should go to the port, there are a lot of pubs and you will find the locals there.
The most important fireworks contest in the Mediterranean area is held every first week of July in Tarragona, in a wonderful bay Punta Del Miracle, a place praised by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi. The competition selects six international pyrotechnic companies every year.
One of the most important Spanish traditional festivals, between 15 and 24 September. It has been celebrated since 1321 and it has been considered of national tourist interest by Spanish government. Human towers, historical parades and fireworks are some of the main activities.
Tarragonas cuisine include grilled fish baked in salt, beach baby octopus, small cuttlefish sauted with baby broad beans, sea cucumbers and wines.
A city with a clearly maritime vocation and mild climate. It is appropriate for practising any sport, especially the aquatic ones, such as sailing, windsurfing, rowing, water skiing and diving. You can find many sorts of sports facilities to enjoy your leisure in a sporting way.
