Many of the home appliances that we use are so necessary that we are at a stand still when one quits. How hard it is to run our homes without them. All of our stored up food can be lost when a refrigerator or freezer goes out suddenly. All these appliance failures are upsetting every time, especially if the warranty has already run out.
Appliances that stop working is enough to deal with, but water using appliances that can cause a flood is more tragic. Sometimes the appliance has not went out, but if one that works with water abruptly has a connection to come loose or burst, it could be a terrible thing to clean up. The wisest way to avoid this particular aggravation is to examine their connections ever so often.
There are several appliances that have a water line connected all the time. A dishwasher, hot water heater, refrigerator, garbage disposal, and a washing machine are all appliances that need water. Each one of these items needs to be on a check list of the areas in your residence where water comes and goes. This examination list is an important matter. Any time water is somewhere it is not supposed to be in a living space it can cause damage. The damage might be more than you would think and expensive if you happen to be out of town for a few days.
Check that all appliance hoses are connected tightly. When they contain rubber seals or washers, check them for break down from time to time and their rubber hoses as well. If the weather you live in is prone to extreme cold in the winter months, you may shut the water to them off totally on extremely cold nights if you think a particular appliance might be affected, like a washing machine in the basement. Insulating pipes is important to prevent pipes under a home from freezing that come into any appliances that use water.
Hot water tanks should be set in a plastic pan made specifically for them. Having a drain located nearby is a wise idea also. Besides the hoses and their connections developing problems, the tanks themselves of older hot water heaters occasionally will get rusted holes in them and create gradually leaking.
Washing machines and dishwashers are the largest threats for flooding in the living space. They are used very regularly and often stop working and need inspecting the most. In a large household, if either of these appliances are out of commission or create a flood, it is more than annoying, it can stop you from cleaning up daily messes and might create a greater mess from water as well.
