Doha is the capital city of Qatar and it is situated on the bank of the Arabian Gulf.It is an intriguing mixture of old and new ancient Arabic tradition and modern metropolitan life. located on a Peninsula in the Arabian Gulf, bordered by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The city is said to be Qatars most beautiful city. The name of Doha has come from the Arabic ad-dawha, the big tree.
In 1949, oil exportation began in Qatar. Much of Qatar's oil and natural gas wealth is visible in Doha. Today the nation as a whole produces over 800 000 barrels of oil daily. This has resulted in a huge immigration of foreign nationals.
You will notice that the majority of the local women are fully veiled and wearing the traditional abayyiah. In Doha is Never take someone's picture especially women.
The Doha city centre is one of the growing attractions in the middle east. The area around Souq Waqif is full of little tailor shops for both men and women. Souq Waqif is the old covered market that originally started out as a weekend market for Bedouins to come into town and trade their meat and wool for staple goods. It has now become quite modernized. It has a number of stalls and perfume shops offering the most exclusive fragrances from the west.
The city does not have many nightspots. The nightlife is Western and confined to hotels.
The Corniche is the road that runs a long the water in Doha. It is also where many of the attractions that can be found here. The Corniche is a water front walk way that starts from the Sheraton Hotel and stretches for 14 kilometres.
One of the interesting attraction in Qatar is Doha Municipal Zoo. The zoo is 20 km from Doha along the Salwa road. It has a varied and large collection of animals, bird and reptiles as well as a small amusement park and play facilities for children.
Doha Fort was built in the 1880's during the reign of Sheik Abdullah bin Qassim al-Thani and later as a fort during Turkish occupation, the fort now stands in the middle of one of the shopping districts downtown. The 19th century exterior is fitted with turret and a small watch tower in a Moorish style. The exterior has some traditional designs in the plaster and gypsum that covers the exterior. The door is also uniquely carved.
