The Republic Of Macedonia
Douglas Scott
The city was struck by a devastating earth quake in 1963. Skopje was rebuilt since then and the new residential quarters bear little resemblance with old Skopje.
The city is a mix of cultures and architecture. It is not chaotic though, a kind of unexplainable magic can be felt, that holds it together and gives it an unique charm. There is a lot of history here it is more than 2000 years old and there is some thing left from every century. The old city hides a ton of secrets but the tourism industry is not developed so you have to discover it your self.
On the left side of the river Vardar, in the ancient part of Skopje is the old Skopje bazaar. In the Old Bazaar area, you will find Skopje's largest and oldest market place, brimming with fruit, vegetables, tobacco and herbs. The Mall in the Centre of Skopje has a wide variety of different stores, restaurants, and cafes.
There are loads of bars in Skopje and going out is phenomenally cheap compared to the prices in UK.
Makedonija St this street is becoming the spot in Skopjes centre downtown. It is packed with cafes and bars, all open till midnight on working days, and until 1 am, Fridays and Saturdays. They are all a great choice to have a cup of coffee during the day, or to start the night when going out.
The new Millennium Cross situated on the pick of the mountain Vodno is the new tourist attraction. The cross was finished in July 2007. It is one of the biggest crosses in the world and its 66 meters high. The Millennium Cross can be seen from 30 km distance.
This stone bridge was built in the 6th century by the Emperor Justinian. Since then it has been the symbol of the city and every ruler tried to leave a mark on it. The bridge has 13 arches and is 214 meters long.
Skopsko Kale or Kale Fortress this fortress has the dominant place in the city. It was built of stone blocks from the ruins of the city of Skupi, during the rule of the Romans.
