Many solar panels have to be placed in direct sunlight in order to collect enough sunlight to charge the batteries significantly. This can be a bit of a pain as many solar powered bird baths have solar panels built into the actual bird bath, this may mean that you have to place the whole bird bath in a sunny location. This may not look as good as positioning it under a tree.

You can buy a solar heater birdbath which has separate solar panels, you can put the birdbath wherever you want it and then put the panels in direct sunlight. This enables you to be much more flexible with your design. You should note however if you choose to do this you must also connect the two units together with a small wire.

It might be possible to attach the solar panel onto a tree which is close to the birdbath. However you will need at least four hours of sunlight hitting the panels to get enough charge for most units. If you are using a fountain or lighting then you may require a larger array of solar panels so it's worth checking it out with a professional.
