Did you know that there are travel agencies which specialize in scuba diving vacations? They work the same as any travel agency with the additional bonus of knowing about diving as well. You can choose from a scuba diving resort which offers diving as part of its activities and may also provide training and equipment as well, or you can choose a scuba diving vacation, where you set up scuba diving activities outside of the resort setting.
It is probably a wise idea to look for independant websites that provide you with information about diving destinations. Most of the time those sites have reviews about dive centers and resorts. That's what you are looking for: reviews from customers.
But there is a huge difference with scuba diving. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN SCUBA DIVING. I can never say this enough. I learnt scuba diving when I was 38. Now I'm not saying that 38 is a ripe old age but still, the body does feel somewhat less strong and less resilient. Added to that, as we get older, we also seem to have more fears. Perhaps we feel we have more to lose if something should happen to us.
You can dive at any time of the year, but you may need to be prepared if the conditions are cold. Many people dive using dry suits during the winter months, which do a much better job of keeping you warm than a wet suit does. There are specific courses you can do it prepare for diving in cold water. If you'd rather give cold water a miss in winter, take a holiday to somewhere warm or tropical, and scuba dive there instead!
If you're on your way to the islands, be sure to enjoy the slow boat ride, the wind blowing in your face, and the warm sea breeze! 'Here, the journey and the DESTINATION matters!'
Many schools run programs that give you a recognized certification, such as a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) qualification. You can take this most places in the world and be able to scuba dive there. I used mine in Egypt! Other programs, however, may not give you any sort of recognized certification, in which case you might be better off training elsewhere.
One of the best ways to get started is if you have a friend who's already an experienced diver. If they offer to give you a try, then give it a go, even if you only do it once. The fun and excitement of scuba diving will make certain you remember the experience forever. It's quite possible you'll enjoy it so much that you want to scuba dive again. You can buddy up with your friend and go scuba diving together on a regular basis.
Scuba diving can be dangerous, but trained professionals are available so that necessary precautions can be taken. Many vacationers who are new to the scuba diving world can take tips and suggestions from professionals, Internet, travel magazines or can attend various training programs.
