Chips represent one in every three potatoes eaten in the UK - adding up to nearly two million tonnes of potatoes a year and a staggering 240,000 kilos of hidden fat entering into the UK food chain. I purchased the Tefal Actifry recently & I am really impressed with it, the chips are marvellous. I also give the chips a minute or two in the fryer before adding the oil, which appears to dry them finally. The versatile Actifry allows you to cook a range of foods including meat, fish, stir fried vegetables, frozen chips and more. You can then sit and enjoy real chips, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, safe in the knowledge that they only contain 3% fat. Tefal have come up with a winning solution of having tasty home cooked chips with only 3% fat.
Everything except the base can go into the dishwasher, and of course there's no oil to filter after frying. View the recipes for the Actifry which are included in the recipe book. Sometimes the reviews given to a new product are a bit over optimistic but not so for the Tefal Actifry, the claim that you can fry 1kg of chips in a tablespoonful of oil is correct and more.
If you want to enjoy chips without the guilt (or fat), the Actifry turns out pretty good healthy chips. My only comments are: you must make sure they are rinsed and well dried before cooking or they can be soggy, in operation the Actifry is quite noisy and it's not cheap.
Finally, you can use whatever oil you like - including a mix of oils such as olive oil, rapeseed and flax - all of which have their own individual health benefits such as a high level of Omega 3 and 6. Also, because of the very sparing use of oil (the machine comes with its own titrated measuring spoon), the bulk of the calories in ActiFry chips (around 80%) come from carbohydrates. The Actifry from Tefal purports to "fry" potatoes in a tablespoon of oil. Forget all about traditional deep fat fryers, greasy fried food and messy, time-consuming oil changes.
The beauty of this fryer is that it uses incredibly negligible amount of oil for frying chips and other items and this is what makes it stand out from the traditional deep fryers. Length of time to cook compared to normal deep fat fryers. My Tefal ActiFry arrived today and I couldn't wait to try it out.
