Everyone knows that smoking is not a healthful lifestyle choice. Yet many of us continue to pursue this expensive and potentially fatal habit every day. Why is it that it is so difficult to quit smoking? Nicotine addiction is the most commonly used explanation for why so many of us are unable to give up the habit and quit smoking once and for all. While there is some truth to this, there is much more going on behind the scenes. It actually should not be difficult to quit smoking at all. Many smokers who have tried and failed repeatedly to quit smoking are finding that there are no shortage of chemicals and treatment programs that promise to assisting the smoker quit smoking. Many of these treatments serve as nicotine supplements to help the body wean itself off of that addictive substance. Examples of these nicotine replacement therapies include nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and nicotine inhalers. Since nicotine is in itself a harmful substance, some wonder whether the treatments are as bad as the disease.
