The Sisal Rugs
Ashwini Maurya
If you want a type of rug that is perfectly stylish and will give you more of a natural or native look, you will want to choose a sisal rug. Sisal rugs are favored by many interior designers, and there are plenty of reasons for that. So what is sisal made out of? And how can you use it for your interior designing? Read on.
Sisal is a natural fiber. It is derived from the agave sisalana cactus plant. Sisal tends to grow in semi-arid regions where little water is needed. Most of the major sisal producers are located in Africa and Brazil. Sisal fibers are strong and can grow up to three feet long. These fibers are harvested from the leaves of the cactus plant by hand and is a very sustainable material. Sisal differs from jute or coir because it is stronger and more durable than any other natural fibers used to make area rugs. When you buy a sisal rug, you can either choose to have a 100% sisal rug, or you can buy a rug that has sisal blended with other fibers.
When you want the best of both worlds, you can get a rug made out of what is called sisal wool. This is a combination of soft wool and durable sisal. It has all the look and feel of sisal, but is blended with the softer wool to achieve a 60/40 wool/sisal blend. Many people choose to have rugs that are made out of natural fibers instead of synthetic fibers because of the level of durability. This is perfect for high traffic areas in residential and light commercial buildings. And even though sisal is a natural fiber, for sisal rugs the fibers are machine woven. This creates a product that is anti-static, non-toxic, and colorfast. The plant material in the rug is excellent for keeping humidity levels balance to prevent static buildup.
You can get a variety of different sizes for your sisal rug. And since the natural fibers of sisal are so durable, this is the prefect rug for all of those high traffic areas in your home. Sisal will stand up to a lot of normal wear and tear far better than synthetic materials, or weaker natural fibers. And when you want durability with softness, a combination of natural fibers in your rug is absolutely perfect for those places in the home where you want your rug to last a long time, but still give you a lot of comfort.
Sisal rugs will be a great addition to any room because you can get this type of rug in any shape, size, or color that your want. Many people love to use a natural theme with a natural fiber rug like sisal, playing up wild animal prints and stark contrasts in the room. But you can also get a more muted pattern on your sisal rug, or even a solid color if that is what you prefer.
