UK Retraining
Scott Edwards
For those considering retraining, UK companies offer a wide variety of options. The first thing to think about is your reason for change.
You could be bored, frustrated, want a challenge or to get away from stress. It could be the way you're treated in your current job - under-valued, being taken advantage of or persecuted. Or the industry you're in is slowing down or offers little opportunity.
Many people get fed up of working anti-social hours for not enough money. Others just want to do something new, because they know they haven't yet really found what they're looking for.
To make a change requires action, but by reading this you're taking the first step. Actually doing something new can be quite scary, but rest assured you're walking on a well trodden path.
So, starting with the premise that you're interested in retraining in the UK: It begs the question, retrain to become what?
Here are some questions to be thinking about:
* Once retrained, do you want to earn more money?
* Do you want this retrained skill to last you for the rest of your working life?
* Is finding a new job quickly an important factor in retraining?
* Should your new skill give you the potential to live and work anywhere in the United Kingdom?
These questions have been asked because they fulfill most of the requirements for a great number of the people we come into contact with. Yet it's surprising how many don't think about them until asked. Don't make the mistake of retraining into an over-subscribed industry.
From our list of questions, let's assume we're looking for an industry that pays well above the average, and offers workers employment up to 65-70 years of age. We also need a growing industry with more jobs available than people to fill them. Finally, your new skill should be in demand all over the country.
When you fully understand what you want out of a new career, you can really fine tune the optimum role for you. The best way to do this is to speak to a training advisor with knowledge of the job on a day to day basis. It's sometimes surprising how little we know until we do this.
