Individuals that lose their jobs due to downsizing often are encouraged to take retraining courses to provide them with the qualifications to gain employment is a job similar to what they had as well as in a broader employment range. Many employers encourage their employees to take retraining courses on the job as a way of making the "cross trained" so they can do another's job if necessary.
