Ask your clients what are the 3 biggest questions they have about your industry. Create a simple report that answers those questions. To get the free report they would have to give you their name and email.
Let your spheres of influence know about the free report and have them offer it to their clients and prospects. Before you know it you have a nice list of people requesting your report.
2. Contest
You can offer fun prizes to get people excited to leave their name and email. Whether it is an iPod, a new Palm, a Digital Camera or Starbucks for a Month, people like to register to win. You can do this without a website by creating "Enter to Win" boxes and placing them at places you know your target market is visiting. Places might be fitness places, Starbucks, high traffic lunch places, businesses that compliment yours, etc.
Your website is a fantastic way to do a more advanced contest. It might be a 50 word essay on the benefits of what you do. You can then award the best entry with a great prize. Get the latest report on the hottest tech gadgets. You can have contestants submit a 200 word essay about the top 3 reasons to use your product/service as their entry. Be sure to get their permission to reprint their information. Once the contest is completed you can re-purpose the content for your blog and website.

Driving traffic to a website does not mean you have to spend hundreds of dollars on Search Engine Optimization, Pay Per Click Campaigns or Online Advertising. Many times you can leverage what you are already doing to create a "buzz" around your website.
