Budget For Traveling To Boston
Lisa Vanhorn
Although nearly everyone desires to travel, some people may think it isn't a practical option for them due to their budget. But budget should never limit anyone from experiencing the many different places of the world. The city of Boston can be expensive but when you know what to look for, it can be just as enjoyable without spending a ton of money.
If your looking for the best value on where to stay during your trip to Boston, the Newbury Guest House is a good option. This location was originally built in the 1880s as two separate town houses and have been combined and refined into modern rooms. Located in the Back Bay on Newbury Street, its amazing that you can find a bargain here. However, this family owned Bed and Breakfast has comfortable furnishings, a friendly staff, and an excellent location. It is closely located to many area attractions including the Symphony Hall, the theater district, and Fenway Park. It operates at near capacity year-round so the most important thing is to make sure you make your reservations well in advance. Rooms can range from moderate in size and price to the largest and most expensive rooms, which include bay windows looking over the activity of Newbury Street. For both a unique lodging experience and an affordable one, the Newbury Guest House should definitely be considered.
When looking for an all-American meal that won't break your wallet, consider stopping in at Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage. This forty plus year old, family owned business isn't located in a cottage, but it does have a cozy comfortable atmosphere and also includes a small outdoor seating area. The food you'll get at Bartley's is a favorite with everyone from regulars to college students to tourists. They boast to serve the best onion rings in the world, along with great burgers. They also carry any and every kind of topping you could ever imagine to put on ground beef. For the herbivores, they also carry veggie burgers and creamy hummus. Mr. Bartley's is also one of the only places in the area where you can still get a raspberry lime rickey, a local favorite that is made with raspberry syrup, lime juice, lime wedges, and club soda. Mr. Bartley's is not only boasts a classic menu and an excellent reputation, but most all meals can be purchased it for under nine dollars, making it a good choice for nearly any budget.
You've found somewhere to stay and you've satisfied your appetite, but what is there to do while you are in Boston without spending money? One favorite activity of visitors and residents alike is Freedom Trail. Freedom Trail is a three mile stretch of sidewalk, marked with a red paint line or red brick, that links sixteen historic sights in the city of Boston. The Freedom Trail Foundation offers free 90 minute led by ranger tours of the trail. This is probably a good bet for families with small children or those who aren't interested in pouring over every detail of the historic spots. However, it is not necessary to have any sort of a guide at all. Every visitor is more than welcome to walk the trail on their own at their own speed. You can stop at every spot, start at the end and go backwards, or even skip around and only stop and the spots that catch your attention. Which ever way you choose, Freedom Trail is a fun (and free!) way to spend an afternoon, and maybe even learning a little about our nations history.
Traveling doesn't have to be expensive and there are always options for lodging, eating, and entertainment for every kind of budget.
