Right off , it should be obvious to anyone that aspires to writing web content that there will a great amount of it that needs to be written and that need shows no signs of decreasing in the future. In fact there is a growing consensus that that ecommerce will grow in leaps and bounds and that the day will come in the foreseeable future where most of the day to day transactions of everyday people will be done on the Internet. To that end, the serious content writer will do well to brush up on their editing skills as well.
One of the things that you'll need to watch out for is rambling. Hunt it down and cut it out where ever you find it in a manuscript. This often happens to the writer who really enjoys the craft; the words tend to tumble out and lose focus. Remember that when you're editing anything that you've written or even the work of another content writer, rambling is usually characterized by long sentences. There are several things that web content should accomplish,
-It should make the intended point and/or reinforce it without meandering
-It can also give the reader some information that leads to the point or fills the point out
-It can also increase the reader's enjoyment of the text by supplying a little break or aside. This is primarily useful in various kinds of web articles that are generally a little longer and afford a little more leeway than web content like homepages.
One of the best litmus tests to see if the content writer has gotten off course is the most obvious. If you start to wonder where the text is going, it has probably strayed.
The essence of editing web content is disposing of words that you can do without. In other words, always edit away wasted words. See the difference? There's a seven word difference between the first and second sentences although they say the same thing. Remember that a content writer generally finds it easier to spot the wasted words in someone else's copy rather than their own. The best writer/editors learn after a period of time which words and phrases are ineffectual and they generally learn to cut these out at the writing stage. A good practice is to call up a piece of web content and see how many words can be deleted without changing the meaning of the passage.
