Vinyl as a material is excellent for use in construction whether it is home improvement or a brand new construction. Vinyl will last much longer than wood – typically vinyl has a lifespan of over 20 years but wood may only last for 10 to 12 years depending on how well it is looked after and the situation where it is fitted.
Vinyl shutters come in a variety of styles and finishes and look as good as any wooden equivalent and they cost pretty much the same as their wooden counterparts when you compare purchase prices. After you have gotten past the initial cost of ownership and start looking at the functionality and maintenance factors you will rapidly come to the conclusion that vinyl is the way to go with your project.
Vinyl scores heavily over wood simply because of its durability and ease of maintenance. Unlike wood, you never need to polish, wax, paint, sand or fill vinyl – the only maintenance you will need to perform will require a sponge and some lukewarm, soapy water – a simple clean to remove dust and mildew accumulation is all that is required to have your vinyl shutters looking as good as the day they were installed.
Vinyl is also not a food-group for insect pests – you never have to worry about termites attacking the installation as you do with wood and in fact, the more vinyl you install the less attractive your home is to pests in the first instance – termites for instance, like an all-wood construction because they see not only a food source for today, but a food store for future generations of wood-munching bugs!
Vinyl shutters are also much easier to work and install which lends them to the do-it-yourself home improvement enthusiast. Wood requires heavy working and is harder to handle and install compared to vinyl, and usually a wooden installation definitely requires the skills and expensive time of a carpenter which will dramatically increase the cost to you.
When you come to look at the costs and comparing a wooden shutter installation with a vinyl product you should look not only at the initial cost of buying and installing the shutters but also the costs associated over the lifetime of ownership. Vinyl shuttering will last for longer so you should spread the initial cost over a longer period which represents better value for money. Then there is the cost of maintenance; wood requires attention and care using polish, lacquers, paints, sanding and frequently expert professional care you cannot perform yourself – all of this adds to the total cost of ownership. Compare a vinyl shutter installation and you rapidly see you are restricted to investing in a sponge, bucket and warm water with washing-up liquid in it – a minimal expense and an easy chore you can perform yourself or if you're lucky, get one of the youngsters on the right track and pay them a couple of bucks to clean it down for you!
Vinyl shuttering wins hands-down over wooden installations and unlike, wood, it will stay looking good right the way through its life until you are ready to replace it in 20 years or more.
