BlackBerry RIM 8820
Alex Gwen Thomson
The BlackBerry RIM 8820 is the first of all BlackBerry devices to offer integrated Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi is 802.11 a/b/g. This is exciting for customers that have been waiting for this technology to become available. The Wi-Fi runs in concert with GSM allowing connection for data applications and voice support via UMA (unlicensed mobile access). Also, calls can crossover between the provider's network and Wi-Fi networks. It allows for GPS while traveling. The memory of the device is excellent, supporting as high as 32 GB of storage with a microSD memory card. There is 64 MB of memory built into the BlackBerry Rim 8820 itself.
The background noise of most cellphones is a distant memory with the BlackBerry RIM 8820. Voice Activated Dialing along with smart dialing make calling anyone a snap. Conference calling, call forwarding, and speed dialing are great assets for the on the go professional. The speakerphone and option for 2.0 Bluetooth devices allows users to talk without hands being involved. A full screen mode option allows users to view videos in full screen. The resolution is excellent allowing for many colors and decent pixel clarity. The trackball and QWERTY keyboard allow for fast typing and access of software applications.
Users get 5 hours of talk time and a whopping 22 days of standby. An MP3 player allows both MP3s and AACs to be played from the device. All Internet applications are fully up to date and will support as many as ten email accounts. A real find for when you need an office away from the office to manage client emails.
Pros
Anyone looking for the latest in BlackBerry technology should be pleased with the new features and updates with this device. It is supportive of the busy business professional. It will allow for more chances to talk with the multi-system integration.
- First BlackBerry device to integrate Wi-Fi
- Allows calling on both Wi-Fi or GSM which ever is first available
- Healthy amount of storage on the device - 64 MB along with expandable memory of 32 GB
- Noise cancellation to reduce background interference
- GPS navigation while traveling
- Many hands free options such as speakerphone, Bluetooth, and voice activated dialing
- Ample battery life with an outstanding 22 days of standby
- Can juggle up to ten email accounts
Cons
Like anything in life, BlackBerry RIM 8820 is wonderful but it does have a couple of drawbacks to be noted by users.
- QWERTY keyboard buttons are a bit slippery
- Odd location of the microSD opening behind the battery
Overall
The BlackBerry RIM 8820 is up to date and is wonderfully equipped with Wi-Fi. It is quick to connect with the Internet and has all the applications one would expect from a BlackBerry product. It is the latest in BlackBerry technology!
