Take Some Time Out In Cobbitty
Donna Mathews
Born on the property 'Denbigh', to the mother of six other children (with one more to follow after Eliza), Ann (who was the eldest daughter of Samuel Marsden) and father Thomas Hassell, a colonial minister in the Anglican Church. Indeed, Eliza herself became a lay minister, tending to the spiritual needs of the tenants and tradesmen of the family's Cobbitty estate. Eliza also worked in the church, helping with Sunday School lessons at the nearby Saint Paul's church in Cobbitty. Never marrying, Eliza looked after her mother after her father's death, learning all about her family history and how to manage the affairs of the family, always putting the needs of others before herself and her own needs.
Cobbitty was only settled in 1812, so it was not long in existence before Eliza's birth, and it might have been known then as 'Kobbaddee' or 'Cobbedee', before the current spelling of Cobbitty was settled on. 'Denbigh' can still be seen opposite the entrance to Oran Park Raceway just out of Cobbitty, with the house built in 1817 added to by Thomas Hassell in 1826. Both parts of the house are still in the original condition.
Take some time out and take a walk along the quiet country lanes and streets of Cobbitty, stopping in at the cafe for refreshments. If you plan it right, you can spend the day at the Cobbitty Markets, held on the first Saturday of each month. Cobbitty Markets boasts a fantastic selection of hand made food, arts and crafts, including jewellery and tasty munchables that you need to get in quickly for, before they all disappear! If not, there are plenty of sights in and around Cobbitty that should not be missed. Make time to explore and experience all there is to Cobbitty.
Speaking of markets, if you are in the market for turf, then Cobbitty is the place to go, with many turf farms growing beautiful grasses ready to transplant into your lawn. With the dry weather Australia is experiencing, why not spruce your yard up with some lush grass grown by experts under optimal conditions?
If the wind is right, why not treat yourself and your loved one to a hot air balloon ride? Leaving from Camden Airport you can be blown on the gentle breeze for an aerial view of Cobbitty, the turf farms, and the gorgeous country side. Who knows where you might end up?
For a relaxing time, even the drive out can't be beaten. Cobbitty Road is reminiscent of many old country roads, tree lined and meandering through the town. It's not so much the destination; it is also the journey!
