Viral marketing is an essential marketing tool because you can't expand your business without marketing it in some way or the other. It has long been proven that of all the advertising methods in use, the 'word of mouth' method works best in a localized scenario. No matter what the glossy ads may say, if a friend tells you of a product and how well it has worked, you become automatically predisposed to trying it out.

The same holds true for viral marketing. This technique relies on people receiving an intimation of your product - not from parties that have a vested interest, but from real live individuals who've tried the product out, and have something good to say about it.
Word of mouth carries far more credibility, and though many companies try their hardest to duplicate this method in their advertising, they'll always come up short. The closest they can get to word of mouth marketing, is to have people in their ads, tell you how great the product or service is. But the problem is one, you don't know those people, and two, you realize that the people in the ads are paid to endorse it.
Viral marketing may indeed be simple, but it should be taken seriously if you intend to be successful at it. You might start by visiting the many forums and reading blogs about it. Online marketers utilize these resources to not only help themselves, but to also discuss their particular experiences with other marketers.
Once you've become a member of a forum or blog, begin contributing what you know about viral marketing. If you feel you don't know much, simply listen to what others have to say. In time, you'll be able to contribute, and become a valuable member of the forum or blog, where you can begin to introduce whatever it is you're into. Just remember not to come across to the other members of the group, as someone trying to "push" your product on them.
Power Groups Can Be A Tremendous Resource
Here's another example of viral marketing in action. Let's say you join a forum or blog that has to do with fishing. After you've been a contributing member of that group for awhile, and the other members of the group hold you in high regard, you can then introduce your product or service to them as a free or 30-day trial. Can you see the power of viral marketing here? Other members of the group will have no problem telling others about your product or service, thereby increasing the amount of exposure your business receives, and you didn't have to spend a dime in advertising.
Bare in mind that to be successful in this type of marketing, your offer must be great, as well as unique. Your offer can't be another product or service that's readily available, and it can't be average either. It must be something that's difficult to obtain, and the only way for a person to get it, is by dealing with you and you alone. To be successful at viral marketing, your product and/or service must be truly unique.
In conclusion, viral marketing works best if your product or service stands head and shoulders above other products similar to yours, and is used often by a tight niche market. If you have a product or service in this that fits this category, your viral marketing efforts will meet with overwhelming success.
