Mathsson F?llbord Table - Designed For Versatile Beauty
Richard Guilfoyle
Architect and furniture designer, Bruno Mathsson, is celebrated for his chairs and well insulated houses. His designs are extremely practical, versatile and beautiful. Mr. Mathsson's acclaimed home furnishing credits also include computer desks, daybeds and tables. An example embodying his fine taste for design is the Fällbord table which incorporates and exemplifies beauty, elegance, versatility and practicality.
It was natural that a young Mathsson would grow up to work with wood primarily, because the Mattsson family had done nothing else for five generations before him. As a little boy, his chores were in the family furniture (möbler) and woodworking shop, and he had hands on experience with techniques, tools and woods all of his life.
Mathsson ordered books and consulted experts in order to acquire skills and knowledge, particularly in engineering and technical aspects, not available to him in the Varnamo area. As a result, he acquired the skill sets he needed at the same time that he made contacts that were valuable to him later in his career. The design awards he received for his furniture (möbler) helped to finance his formal education.
Although he created a lot of different furniture types, all of it was carefully made to be comfortable and beautiful. In addition, he recognized that people like flexibility and like furniture pieces that can be rearranged and used in innovative ways. His modular style adapts easily to different spaces and moods and increases its appeal.
You can use a Fällbord table in so many different ways. While "fällbord" only translates to "folding table" in the language of Sweden, this piece offers more than the name implies. It was initially made in the year 1935, and the major components of its base were crafted from birchwood. The surface of the table was laminated in white after also having been crafted from birchwood. Other versions were manufactured from lumber such as oak, beechwood, cherry, ash, etc.
The table designed by Mathsson can be converted to be extremely small (23 cm) when it is completely folded and can be expanded to 280 cm in length with its greatest extension. You can lower or raise the leaves at either end, so that you can utilize it as a small surface for composing letters or as a surface large enough to hold an entire feast. You can also set it up for almost any size in between. If you are not used to metrics, we are discussing a spread of approximately 9 inches to approximately 110 1/4 inches.
During the 1960's Mathsson utilized modern materials such as metal tubing and synthetics in the furniture he constructed. While these later works were impressive, Mathsson is probably best known for his earlier creations such as the elegant Fällbord which allows for flexibility in crowded areas. While the Fällbord is believed to be based on folding tables that were once found in Swedish country homes, Mathsson transformed the traditional design into something unique and all his own.
