H-F-L-Team: Common Online Marketing Mistakes
Douglas Miller
Every list of viable strategies comes any equally long, or even longer, list of marketing faux pas. These blunders can cause temporary setbacks or can destroy businesses altogether. This is especially true for online businesses, as the word gets around really fast among venture networking circles and into the public domain. When mistakes are made, they are sometimes very difficult to overcome. Below are a few of those moves that new online business owners should not do under any circumstances.
1) Never favor one type a person over another. Yes, this is a form of targeting, which is preferable in networking, especially when a particular business venture is design to represent those in a particular field (such as new moms). Still, new business owners should be careful not to base their preferences based on gender, color, creed, political affiliation, or other personal characteristic. This is discrimination pure and simple and can drive people away really fast, not to mention create uproars and mud slinging. A worst-case scenario would be legal action taken again the business. Such preferences should be loose and tentative, meaning not strict. Furthermore, such representations provided by online businesses should be based on public interest, hobbies, career choices, fashion styles, etc., without casting judgments over others for their differences.
2) Never restrict a business venture's networking objectives. When preferences are too tightly set, business owners have no room to spread their wings. They must be flexible and open toward variations on a theme so they can broaden their own horizons and distribute themselves in a wider span of directions. In this way, the business can gain momentum and become known in spaces that could possible extend over into other fields and types of businesses. One should find a happy medium between a specific target contacts and random advertisements.
3) Never criticize other businesses in advertisements. Cutting down other particular ventures in an attempt to promote one's own cause will drive a business directly in the ground. Despite what many business owners might think, the best way to promote one's own venture is to honestly showcase that business' merchandise and/or services in an exciting and attractive way. This can be done without even mentioning other businesses. In the end, the business will stand out with strength, uniqueness and independence, just as it was desired to do.
The main point here is that new online businesses should be careful how they conduct their affairs with other professionals and the public. Openness and a casual sense of etiquette should be conveyed through the ideal advertisement. Such an approach will be the best way to increase traffic and broaden networking contacts. Moving your Hundred-Fold-Life forward with a positive attitude toward fair and honest competition is healthy and will ensure ongoing and rising success. In the end, such integrity will show through that business' everyday practices. Success or not, though, this honorable behavior will deter any business from destruction, and that is one ultimate goal to every venture-survival! Without this consideration, nothing else matters.
