How Frequent Home Inspections Help
Dror Klar
One of the most devastating, expensive, and fairly common things to take care of in your house may be water damage. A devastation as horrible as water surges from really bad weather, bursting water pipes, right down to those tedious little pipe leaks can cause destruction to a residence. Many times water coming from any of these things could create damage to many things in a home. A little hidden drip in the bathroom may produce enough water to cause a soft spot in the floor or wall in a bathroom. This can destroy baseboards, tiles, carpet, or anything that will soak up water. This is just one example of devastation water will create. It could take days or weeks and can cost a lot to fix the destruction.
Even though many kinds of water destruction, for instance a flood due to unforeseen weather are not normally ever preventable, but there are many other types of water damage in the residence that can be when you take a few preventative measures.
One way to reduce the risk of water destruction from originating is through well organized yearly examinations of particular things in a house, naturally, places where there is water. Taking the time to conduct these inspections, may make you really happy you did. It is the best way to make sure that there are not going to be any sneaky liquid surprises just waiting to occur.
You will want to begin by preparing a list of any of the places where water makes it way into and goes out of a building, and do not overlook the basement and roof. If you do not have a basement, the crawlspace underneath a home is an area likely to have water problems. When your list is complete, start at the top of your home, then the attic, and work your way down. In an attic, you may look for dark or wet places in the ceiling, beams, walls, floor, and in the insulation. You may notice a wet musty odor similar to that you can get in a basement because there has been water getting in there for some length of time. The smartest time to examine an attic is when it is raining hard and you can see a water problem while it is going on.
Inside the living area of a home, inspect all pipe connections and look for indications where water has dripped and has went away or is still present. This involves showers, bathtubs, underneath bathroom and kitchen sinks, and dishwashers. Also include the water connections and drainage hose on the washing machine, the water line connecting to the refrigerator if it has one, and the hot water tank lines. In the crawl space you need to use a flood light or flashlight if there is no lighting under there. Look out for water lines that can be seeping water or spraying on any thing wood. This will likely create some pretty costly structural devastation. Outside hose connections and sprinkler systems need looking over too. Take care of every repair as as soon as you can.
