The traditional Christmas markets are another attraction not to be missed. Indeed, regarded as some of the best in both the UK and Europe, Manchester is filled with the scent of mulled wine and hot chestnuts as they open their stalls to the public.

This year also sees the unveiling of a six-metre high German Christmas pyramid ? the Weihnactspyramide - complete with nativity scene, as well as an Alpine House.

However, no festive break would be complete without taking in the sights of the city's Christmas trees. Boasting two, visitors to Albert Square can enjoy the traditional fir tree, whilst Piccadilly Gardens will house a 32-foot Christmas sphere, comprised of coloured orbs.
