But how difficult can water damage restoration be? Perhaps there are those tasks best left to the experts and there are also those we can do ourselves. To start with, floors and carpets can easily be the first to get damaged in case of a flood or water disaster. These are after all, the first parts or items in the house to get submerged in water. For this reason, water damage restoration usually starts with these two.

Because of its inherent nature to absorb water, wooden floors are the most prone to water damage. The most immediate solution to wet wooden floors would be of course to air dry them. It is important to remember that wooden floors cannot be dried some drying tools and techniques as these are prone to cracks if dried abruptly. Instead, open doors and windows to let the sunshine and air in, and bring down humidity. Electric fans may also be used to aid in the drying process.

Once the drying process is done, it is then time to clean your floors thoroughly. To do so, first use vacuum cleaners and brooms. Then apply cleaning oil or soap for wooden floors to remove all traces of potential health hazards. Apply the oil in straight strokes going in the direction of the grain of the wood, using a piece of clean cloth spreading it evenly.

If your wooden floors or boards are observed to have taken quite a substantial amount of water, these may be prone to swelling and buckling. While these cases are rare and extreme, if it comes to that it is advisable to remove and replace a wooden board every few feet or so to reducing the possibility of these floors collapsing altogether. This type of water damage restoration however, would best be left in the hands of the professionals.

In the same way as wooden floors, rags and carpets can very susceptible to damage in the event of floods or water disasters. This is because they can also absorb large volumes of water as in the case of wooden floors. Soaked rags and carpets should be attended to straight away because their continued presence in a room can keep humidity inside, preventing other parts of the house to dry up as well. Rags and carpets which are completely drenched in water, possibly unclean water at that, can also cause bacteria and molds to multiply rapidly and create a health hazard for you and your family.

For these reasons, rags and carpets have to be immediately cleaned using a pressurized hose, a cleaning disinfectant or soap, and a soft brush. After a thorough brushing, these should be dried under the heat of the sun to completely remove any signs of possible mold growth.

Homeowners need not spend much in water damage restoration by buying expensive equipment and materials or employing water damage restoration professionals. Sometimes all it takes is a good set of instructions to follow, a pair of willing hands, and a great deal of common sense.
