When I set my fitness goals, or help my trainees to do so, I try to focus on what will really help me achieve: hard work. No magic pill, super-duper training video, nor infomericial piece of equipment can replace that.
It takes a constant push towards improving yourself by giving everything you've got every time. It's about setting your fitness goal, visualizing it, and then doing whatever it takes to get there.
Think of it this way: will taking it easy when you workout do anything? How about finding a comfortable amount of weight to lift, then doing the same amount every single time. No! The only thing that will push your towards your fitness goals will be working hard with as much intensity as you can handle! Lifting heavy, sprinting, and pushing it every time you workout will do it!
Most people don't train hard enough to see real results. You have to push yourself to a place you've never been if you want to see results you've never seen. When you do the same thing over and over again and you can expect the same mediocre results. What you should do is run that extra mile, sprint that extra hill, tack on some more weight on that bar or pick a heavier kettlebell.
If you want better results, training harder will increase the efficiency of each workout. There is no magic solution to reaching your fitness goals, just hard work. Becoming fit goes beyond changing your body, its changing your mind to push yourself past the limits that are currently set.
