Probably the worst thing about bad breath is that we don't know we have it. All too often, it takes none too subtle clues to let us know we're not minty fresh. You know the warning signs ... co workers move away from you at the water cooler, or they lean away from you during meetings. Worse yet, the dreaded "I'm not really in the mood, honey".
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell someone they've got bad breath without running the risk of offending them. And while some people are better at blunt honesty than others, it's much better to nip the problem in the bud. Most people are well aware of the causes of bad breath, like that sub sandwich you just had for lunch or the morning coffee that seems to hang around all day. But even if you don't want to change your eating and drinking habits, here are five steps you can take to banish your bad breath once and for all ...
Step One: Keep Hydrated
Sounds easy, but most of us don't keep hydrated. By the time you're thirsty, you're basically dehydrated. Keep water handy, and drink a lot of it. Not only will it keep your mouth moist, it will help flush away all sorts of toxins that cause bad breath. Oh, and let's not forget all the other benefits of drinking water, like healthy skin, teeth, and internal organs.
Step Two: Scrape It
Most people don't realize the tongue is the biggest cause of mouth odors. Your tongue is literally a catch all for the residue of everything you eat. Keep it clean by brushing it at least twice a day, top and bottom, with toothbrush and toothpaste. If you want to be more thorough, invest in a tongue scraper, which are available at any drug store.
Step Three: Avoid The Usual Suspects
Red sauces, onions, garlic, pungent cheeses, cold cuts, and concoctions containing these ingredients (like pizza) are well known causes of bad breath. While we're at it, let's add coffee and tobacco as well. Any of these will turn your breath from sweet to retreat in just a few minutes. Hey, we're not telling you to change your diet, but in this case, two plus two does indeed equal four.
Step Four: Chew Sugar Free Gum
Yes, some sugar free gum is excellent for masking odors, especially strong peppermint gums. But there's another benefit. Sugar free gum is excellent for stimulating saliva. Saliva keeps the mouth moist and fights odors. And of course, sugar free gum isn't harmful to your teeth enamel.
Step Five: Don't Be Afraid
Of the dentist, that is. Visit your dentist and hygienest every six months. Over time, there are all sorts of nasty villians finding a home on your teeth and gum line. A good, thorough cleaning greatly reduces the chance of harmful bacteria taking over your mouth.
Summary
One last thing ... be cognizant of what's coming out of that mouth of yours. Most people don't have it in them to be brutally honest and point out your less-than-fresh breath. Cut a potentially embarassing situation off at the pass and banish your bad breath forever by following these simple five steps.
Wisdom Teeth Bad Breath
Bad breath is generally causedby bacteria, which releases sulfur compounds, when certain changes are made toits environment. In most cases, these changes are caused by food.
The fact that Garlic and Onioncauses bad breath isn't news for anyone. But, do you know why they cause badbreath? It's because both garlic and onions have sulfur compounds. Sulfur isoften used by nature to create odors. Everybody knows about the skunk forexample. The odors that he is releasing are done as a defense mechanism.
All that smell is created by his organism with the help of sulfur compounds(one of them is skatoles). If you let food out of the fridge for too long itwill become spoiled. This happens because the food's proteins are broken downby anaerobic bacteria. The smell of sour milk for example is caused by the sametype of bacteria that causes bad breath in people. And the same goes for meatas well.
There are four types of foodsthat boost the production of sulfur. They're listed all below:
1. Drying Agents: in mostcases alcohol is the drying agent of choice when it comes to food. Obviously, alcohol is also used in most adult drinks, like wine, beer or hard liquor. Thereal problem is that alcohol is also used exactly in the product that should befighting the problem, mouthwash. In chemical terms, alcohol is a desiccant.
It's often used in laboratories to reach places that are harder to clean, likebeakers or test tubes. The same thing happens in the oral cavity. Somethingelse you should know is that the alcohol doesn't even serve a purpose in themouthwash. It's just used to make the mouthwash look appealing in the shop. While all the coloring chemicals and flavoring they use isn't soluble in water, but it is in alcohol.
Even though cigarettes aren'tfood, by smoking you're sure to have bad breath. It's even worse than alcohol.
2. Protein Foods That AreDense: Everyone knows that you get bad breath if you eat dairy foods. In South California, two thirds of all people are lactoseintolerant. Millions and millions of people worldwide can't eat dairy becausetheir organism doesn't breakdown their proteins. If they do eat dairy, aminoacids will build up in their organism. Then they will become sulfur compounds, with the help of the throat and tongue bacteria. In a few cases, the same thingwill also happen when some people eat chicken, beef or fish.
There are also some rare caseswhere people can't break down the proteins from beans. This disease is calledTMA (comes from Trimethylaminuria), though it's also called "Fish OdorSyndrome". The name comes from the smell, which is the same as thatproduced by fish that are decaying. The odor has in it nitrogen compounds andsulfur compounds. Those that have TMA aren't allowed foods with dense proteinor beans.
3. Sugars: it would be reallynice if you could just chew some M&Ms and lose the bad breath. Or how greatwould it be to get rid of Hershey Kisses. Those that are producing ALTOIDSwould want you to believe this is possible. Besides Altoids, there are otherproducts that try to convince people of the same thing, without a real basis. It has no basis in real science and it doesn't make much sense either. You dofeel a MINT taste when you put a MINT flavor on your taste buds, but it's onlya taste. The sugar that Altoids has will help the bacteria release sulfurcompounds, so their claim of helping you get rid of the bad breath is justwrong.
Besides that, the bacteria canalso use the present sugars and make glycan strands. These contribute to thecreation of plaque on your teeth, which causes gum disease and tooth decay. Italso boosts the bad breath. Because you can't really smell your own breath, youthink everything is alright, feeling the mint on your taste buds, but notfeeling the breath that others are smelling.
The conclusion is that youshould avoid mints, candies and chewing gum if you want to keep a fresh breath.
4. Acidic Foods: below aresome of the foods that you should avoid:
? Coffee ? regular and decafcoffee have acids
? Tomato Juice
? Citrus Juices ? Grapefruit,Pineapple and Orange Juice
Acidic foods are such aproblem because bacteria react in a bad way to their environment.
