Getting Around

Penang’s public transport system is efficient and getting around by taxis, buses or trishaws may be a fun and inexpensive way of catching the sights. Do note that prices differ tremendously between the public bus and taxi. We did a price comparison between the two and this is what we got:

o     From 100 Cintra Street (a Hostel in Penang Chinatown) to Batu Ferringi
Taxi ride costs RM$30.00

Bus ride costs RM$1.50

o     City Taxis: Most city taxis do not use the meter. You may either insist on the meter being turned on or agree on the price before you move off.

o     City Buses: Most buses use coin machines to collect fares. The main bus terminals are at Pengkalan Weld (ferry terminal) and KOMTAR (ground floor).

o     The maps showing bus services, bus routes are clear and easy to read. You can also ask the ticket master how to reach your destination.

It is an experience to take the buses, as not only are they cheap but you get to see a variety of landscapes as well. Buses in Lane 1 go towards Batu Ferringi and Lek Lok Si temple, while buses in Lane 2 travels through the schooling district in Penang.
