Mt Pleasant Cemetery
Years ago, Mt Pleasant Cemetery and Bukit Brown Cemetery was one large resting place for the deceased. When the construction of the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) near Lornie Road went under way, the big cemetery had to be cut into two. Both cemeteries share the same history and many other similarities but it is apparent that the Mt Pleasant Cemetery is more eerie than its counterpart. It is still relatively untouched and has its own unique set of jungle plantation. A view of giant trees measuring up to 6 stories high can be seen if you’re willing to travel further into cemetery grounds. The cemetery seems to have been covered up by the wilderness and its almost as if the place has been abandoned. No one to care for the graves and no visitors paying respects to their beloved ones.
Oddly enough, there’s no signage or landmark to indicate that a cemetery lies within the towering trees and the thick hedges. Many people are unaware that there lies the Mt Pleasant Cemetery. A chain is the only thing that stops vehicles from entering the cemetery and beyond the closed gates, a massive graveyard can be seen. Head stones are cracked, overgrown vegetation grows tall and dust and algae settles. At night, it is pitch black. The thick bushes and tall trees ensure that no moonlight or otherwise lights up the cemetery.
Tombs made of bricks
The tombstones at Mt Pleasant Cemetery are similar to the ones that you find on the other side of the PIE at Bukit Brown Cemetery. They are mostly made of bricks and are generally smaller in size and less pretty compares to Bukit Brown’s.
Pontianak that kills!
Perhaps one of the interesting stories on Mt Pleasant Cemetery is that of the Pontianak. Sightings have been reported and her eerie laugh as she roams amidst the trees at night can be heard. A Pontianak, according to Malay legend, is a female spirit. One that is very evil and vengeful. It is said that this female spirits are those of women who have died while giving birth. Most of the time, the Pontianak lives in stealth mode so if you manage to spot one, you could consider yourself lucky. Nesting amidst the tall angsana trees, they have the ability to move extremely fast. Pontianaks would sometimes appear as a young and sexy woman and with beauty as her tool, she would seduce and attract men. Once the men are close enough, a transformation occurs and she turns into an old hag. Vengeance is usually on her mind. She would inflict pain and open a man’s belly with her sharp nails, letting his intestines drop out. To add insult to injury, she would then pull out his penis.
Such sightings and such gruesome cases have been reported to police in the past. Because of the extremity of the reports, they were classified only as brutal murders. The Pontianak remains a myth as no one has ever caught one to prove its existence. How does one pin a murder on something paranormal? Gangsters and criminals were believed to be the culprits and skeptics believed that the sightings of Pontianaks were merely monkeys. So the story goes….
