Singapore Lost and Found

Amidst the towering skyscrapers, condominiums and large shopping malls is a cluster of three houses. Dwarfed by its tall neighbours, these three houses seem out of place. Some might not notice these houses but because it is so out of place, they stand out. Many people wonder, what are these houses doing here?

The houses, which are located within walking distance to Ngee Ann City, is in a depressed state. It’s almost as if they are calling out to be rescued. What was once three beautiful houses has now faded into nothingness. It is not hard to imagine them as they were, beautiful and grand. Now, all that is left is in disarray. A security post with a “No Trespassing” sign is clearly posted but that doesn’t stop people from entering to take stroll the grounds of what was once three beautiful houses in their glory days.

The first house is partially visible from Grange Road. A It is probably one of the best examples of 30’s modernism. Built in such proportional fashion, the house seems as if it was intricately designed and carefully erected. The curved windows of the rooms span from side to side and a large balcony is held up by 4 tall pillars. A decently sized porch lies underneath the balcony. This house would have been the talk of the town back in its day. It probably stood proud and strong and was the venue for many parties. Now, it lays bare and open. Waiting for some to rescue it with tender loving care. It would probably take a mighty deep pocket to restore this house but with patience and determination, this house could once again be the talk of the town.

The other two houses sit further up the road. They are similar in architecture but are more massive in size. Sadly, the two houses are in a similar state as the first. Their colours are faded and the grass grows tall. They both sit quietly, except for the sounds of kampong chickens running around in circles. The main entrance has been boarded up, as if to keep people out. The windows are covered, as if to stop people from peeking in. Still, no one is around to care for the house and weeds continue to grow from the glass blocks that lay in the open.

As with all abandoned property, there is probably a story behind them. It is rumoured that many interesting stories have emerged from the three houses. And as expected, one of them involves death…

The three houses are in the vicinity of Ngee Ann City Plaza.
